The price is high if it's just a Firebird even with the low miles. It's nothing special. If it is a Trans Am it depends on what the options were. WS6, aluminum wheels, TPI etc.
Mechanically the cars were petty good. Just your usual wear out items.
The rest is cosmetics. Headliner droop, console pulling away at the sides, clearcoat issues if it is original paint and the rear spoiler cracking if it is the big black wing. The electric window motors have a tendency to slow down over time and the plastic gears usually break in the headlight motors also.
Oh and there were no GTA's in 86

So if you have a goat as your weekend warrior then why not pick a car that is actually a good DD instead of a outdated sports car. If you have 4 grand to spend on a DD you can get cars that are better DDs and even faster than the 86 bird in some cases. 2000ish GTP for example is just as fast but much more economical.

PEWTER- 2001 TRANS AM WS6
Check the floors, doors, jams, wheel wells, and under the hatch for rot.
Check the body lines make sure all the metal is straight.
Under hood look for damage and rot by the batt.
check the frame next to the steering box. it likes to crack there. check for the smell of water in the inside. check all fluids

IMHO you could buy a 3800-II powered f-body for that or less and still be nicer and faster than a tired v8 smogger from those years..
A stock 3800 would eat that car alive reguardless of what factory engine it has..
Just about any newer v6 car will have more power and be faster than an 86 fire chicken/TA..
