Valve problem
Hey guys got a question. I was working on a friends LS1 today changing a valve spring when the valve dropped down. It is resting on the piston now and hasn't fallen all the way down the oil sleeve yet. I'm looking for any advice on what we can do to get it. I'm going to try to pick up a magnetic tool that can fit in there. Could I remove the oil seal to have a little more room to get in there? I know that I could try to remove the exhaust header and try to push it up from there and last option is to remove the head and just put the valve back in and the new spring. Any advice would be great. Thank you guys

Did you try bringing the piston back up, using a ratchet & socket on the crank ? I guess you did have an air hose connected in the spark plug hole to hold the valves up ?

I did use the air but I don't think it was enough pressure. I haven't really tried turning the motor over in risk of the valve completely falling down.

If you had air to it, the piston should be all the way down, so I'd try to gently bump it back up.

Or use the piston to hold it there, while you pull the header off...

Just don't use the starter to bump it, might bend the valve...

hey bill thanks for the advice it was in cylinder 3 on the intake valve, I did get it up by just slowly turning the motor over by hand and the valve came up more then enough. Got the new spring on and it is running good. Thanks for all the advice guys.

Glad to hear. For future reference (now that you're a pro at this), put the piston at TDC and lock it in gear if you have a stick or lock it with the pulley bolt and your wrench before you apply the air. They lose pressure often because the piston rotates down.
