You can hunt deer with a long bow...I'm not saying I would prefer that round for deer hunting but sure you could.

I'm just being argumentative again though.

I agree with every comment you made and will caveat them with this:

A firearm is a tool. All tool's have an application. Would you use a vice grip to hammer a nail? You would if it was the only thing you had access to and you had to hammer the nail immediately but there are certainly better tools for the job. I would say, put an optic on a weapon that fits what application you are using it for. If someone is using an AR style rifle for longer range shooting then so be it. There may be better tools for that application but that one will certainly do the job. I think it makes more sense to put an optic on a weapon that fits how you intend to use that weapon rather than putting an optic on a weapon based on society's expected/typical use of the weapon.

Basically, if I planned on using my Savage 10FP for CQB, I'd put a CQB oriented optic on it rather than an optic oriented towards the longer ranged shooting that that particular weapon is expected/designed to be used for. The fact that I'm using that weapon for that use is a separate issue than which optic fits the mission.

Just food for thought. Basically, I don't think there is a right or wrong as long as it's safe when it comes to a lot of firearm questions. It mostly a matter of opinions and funds available. Try out a bunch of stuff and go with the one that feels and performs the best in your hands for whatever application you plan to use it for.

Most states have a minimum caliber to legally take big game, and that was what I was referring to.

I gotcha. Being that the OP was talking about hunting in GA...In Ga you can hunt deer with .223/5.56. You can hunt hog with any center fire rifle during deer season. Out side of deer season it's rimfire only for hogs.

Yikes! I'd rather not trust my anatomy to a rimfire against a big boar who is hell bent on ripping me open.

For that reason, I only take them during deer season in which I'm normally hunting with a 30-30, 30-06, .308 or 300 Win Mag. I'm not terribly worried about those rounds and a hog but I have to admit, I've only ever shot one from the ground. Most of the time I like stand hunting them. It's kinda freaky when you walk up on a bunch of them and you scare them as bad as they scare you.
