hit or miss really. obviously if you run it at the track alot you are running more of a risk but alot of guys have blown the 10 bolt stock playing around on the street.

People have broke them with stock power....
They are pieces of shit...
Start saving
Seriously though, some people are luckier than others. Some have 11 sec and faster cars running the 10 bolt. They are far and few between, but out there. Do you plan on making the car faster? Ever putting DRs on it? If so, you're asking for trouble.
Driving it moderately and having street tires will help prolong it. It's a crapshoot at best

Hard to tell really. As long as you don't abuse it the rear may last the life of the car. However, if it does break, don't waste your money fixing it -- use it as an excuse to upgrade.

Or Dana 60, but a grippy clutch with grippy tires on stock power = kaboom

12 bolt with an A4 here. Upgraded to 3.73's as well.

9" with 4.11 gear here. I might change to a 3.73 though when I go FI.

Itold some friends that don't suscribe here, The last they want to hear is ford 9" is best
They are GM and Dana 60 fans. But I see they are all over 2 grand. Friend Scott has 69 Roadrunner(383) and Gtx(440). His CJ-7 has 401 with dana 30 and corporate rear. Summers axles 4.56 detroit lockers. I tell him Dana 44 is better than corporate. he runs 35's and has done Rubicon. Itell him or you tell me, My bearings(carrier and pinion)went not my axles or ring?pinion, The only way to get bigger bearings is new housing. Ford 9". I must swap new rear end(big bucks). in Z-28. I'm glad I'm still one of the lucky ones, OE diff still and 92k miles, M6. Never put drag radials on it, never will, my 60 ft times suck but she'll post 107-110 MPH trap speeds. And I swear the car jumps sideways 2 or 3 feet when I slam 2nd at the track....

The main three -- being 9", 12 bolt and Dana, are all better in their own ways. In addition to strength, you may also consider weight, efficiency, cost and fit. It goes without saying though, that no matter which you choose, they are all far superior to the stock 10 bolt.
Here's a thread with lots of good info: http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125182

I had a 9" in my 93 T/A and when the 10 bolt goes in my 00 WS6 I'll do the same.

The 4.11 gear is great for acceleration and for the HP mods I currently have, which aren't many (LTs, lid, and full exhaust). However, I am thinking that the 4.11 gear will be too small of gearing for FI. I'll have to work the numbers when I make a decision to move forward.
