Twice Ive heard "Those Pettys" What made the Pettys was Lee was the first "Professional" stock car driver. Meaning he did it for a living. Everyone else drove as a hobby. Also if you go back and look at the record books in the 60's and 70's when Richard drove, only about 5 or 6 cars ran every race of the season. Not really too difficult to win a championship. Kyle just kinda sucked. It is very difficult to pick the greatest of all time even just in one sport and one position like qaurterback. Stats dont tell the whole story. I think you actualy had to see them play. Statisticly Montana isnt the greatest qb. But to watch him play Id put him or Johny U as the 2 best. But as far as the single best athelete overall. Thats tough.

Watch Shaq vs. He isnt great at any sport but does decent for someone who never trained in them. Johnny Tomac was a great mtn biker. He could show up at a race and win all the events. Shaun Palmer was a great athlete too.

I have to go with Bo Jackson. I saw him at Fenway when he was with the Royals and he made a simple grounder to short a very close play. Incredibly fast.

Jackson excelled in both football and baseball. While Jordan was the BEST basketball player ever, he pretty much sucked at baseball, and was not good enough to earn his pro card on the PGA tour

I'm trying to keep in mind "athlete'', not "best at his/her sport"

IMO - I think it would have to be Babe Ruth. The man put baseball on the map and 75 years after the man played his last game, people are still talking about him. There was not a single person since did what The Babe did. And remember He was a pitcher for the first five years of being in the Majors. Imagine what his numbers would have been if he was just a fielder!
