It celebrates or so I thought The Battle of Puebla. Although the Mexican army was victorious over the French at Puebla, the victory only delayed the French advance on Mexico City. A year later, the French occupied Mexico. Puebla is in southern mexico and closer to Gautemala and Honduras, than the US border.

As far as the Irish, St Patrick's day comparison goes... I think you'd be hard pressed to find any Irish American that would find the use of pro USA clothes to be disrespectful on any day period.
To me, that is the issue. The fact that these so called Mexican AMERICANS found it to be disrespectful on THEIR day.
