2.73 to 3.42
I have a 2002 A4 z28. I currently have a 2.73 rato gear.
My question is i'm having it switched to a 3.42 this wednesday. I hope a made a good choice. I'm just looking for a little more power from a dig and still get decent MPG. Do you guy's think I will see a little better quarter mile ET?? Also hopefully better street race pull..

Thats what I have in my car still. Its good off the line. Big enough to burn, small enough to hook-up when needed. Have fun.

You won;t notice a change in power, but it will feel like it. You should see a decrease in your ET's.

I think 3.42 is a nice choice for an A4 car

I have tried to get a set of gears installed at 2 differant garages. I have a '02 z28 automatic with 2.73 gear 2 series carrier. I called up summit and they told me I would need a thick cut gear if I went above a 3.08 gear so I choose 3.42. the box say's 3.42 G.M 7.5+7.625 thick cut 3.42. I went to 2 differant garages and it does not line up with the pinion or abs sensors won't work its like I need to install a spacer and longer bolts. My car rearend has never been changed and is th 2 series carrier Torsen unit. I called up summit and they told me it could have been boxed up wrong from the factory. Its also a summit brand ring and pionion. Very very pissed wasting alot of money

what stall converter are you using?

It wont be that noticable until you couple it to a performance torque converter. I went from 3.23 to 3.73, and did not notice too much of a difference, it wasn't until I added a 3k (should have gone 3600) stall that I went from "farfegnugen to fukenmovin".
You have a 2 series carrier with the 2.73 rearend setup, you probably purchased the thinner 3 series carrier gears.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
I changed from 2.73's to 3.42's (changed from my original rearend to a 6 speed rearend) and gained .15 sec in the 1/4 mile (from 13.45 to 13.30). This was also with the stock RSA's... Changing to Nitto 555r's gained a better 60' which again lowered my ET. MPH went up from 106 to 108 (after tires).
All of this was to an otherwise stock drivetrain and exhaust.
My biggest gain (from 13.09 to 12.59) was after I installed a 3400 stall TC.

Just got back home 3.42 rock . It pulls really hard anywhere from 0 to 100 where ever you decide to hammer it down at. I do need the wider rim package now when it shifts into second i get a nice spin just like the 6speed guy's get.. Go with the 3.42 setup and you will love it....The only down fall is there is a little gear whine but nothing that will bother you much. I was told that it may happen because I installed a THICK CUT gear because I have a 2 series carrier and was using a 3.42. The cool thing is before when i had the 2.73 installed I would hammer it at 45mph and not much would happen but now with 3.42 it pulls just as hard as first gear all the way up to 100. Actually when you hammer it at 100 it pulls alot hard than before.
3.42 gears are a perfect choice for A-4 ls1
