Recalled Winchester Ammo
Greetings,
Please pass this immediately to all the Agents/TFOs in your respective divisions:
Any Agent/TFO that has been issued .40 caliber 180 grain Winchester bonded hollow point rounds for duty ammunition needs to turn in any of this ammunition in their possession to the Firearms Instructor in their respective office ASAP and be re-issued .40 caliber165 grain Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point ammunition in its place. The Winchester ammunition has been recalled and has been found to cause repeated malfunctions in many firearms. The recalled Winchester ammunition is contained in a brass colored casing. The Speer Gold Dot ammunition is a silver colored casing. Please refer to the attached photographs if you are unsure of which ammunition you have. For further information please contact PFI Mike Baker or myself.
DO NOT HOLD ON TO ANY OF THIS AMMUNITION FOR ANY REASON. WE HAVE TO ACCOUNT FOR IT AND SEND IT BACK TO WINCHESTER.

Hmmm I thought Ranger was usually in nickel plated casings, at least all my .45 is. There is no mention of this in a press release or recall from Winchester a bit more info please? Specifically which 180gr bonded round is supposedly being recalled as there are at least three, any info on lot numbers?Last edited by ztrouble; 03-23-2010 at 03:36 AM.

I copied and pasted that info from my work email. It was sent out to all federal and local agencies that may use that ammo. Those were the pictures attached with the email. Thats all I know.

Must be charged too hot and making glock mags fall out as the unsupported chambers pop.
Just a guess.
Funny my 10mm has never popped with all the super heavy handloads I've shot.

Sorry for saying it seems kind of fishy though. Like I said all of my Ranger ammo is nickel plated casings or silver color, black talons, sxt's and I believe the new PDX1 rounds are also all in silver casings.
Could you possibly try to get some more info for us?
Below is all I could find and it stems back to two years ago
Subject: .40 Cal Ammo Warning
28 April 2009
Report of Faulty .40 Caliber Ammunition
On 15 April 2009, the FBI Training Division advised recently tested .40 service ammunition provided by Olin-Winchester was defective and did not perform to acceptable law enforcement standards of accuracy when tested by the Defensive Systems Unit (DSU) at the Ballistic Research Facility, Quantico, Virginia.
DSU conducted a test of Winchester .40 service ammunition, Winchester Q4355, specifically lot numbers: CC03, CC13, CD10, CD20, CD30, CD40, CD50, CD60, and CD70. Testing of this ammunition demonstrated key holing and yawing at distances of ten yards or greater, and inaccuracy to the point numerous complete misses (off the cardboard) occurred at twenty-five yards from pistols fired from a rest. Testing has not indicated any problems with the pistol's cycling or functioning, only with accuracy. The defective ammunition can be identified by a red sealant around the primer, which was applied during manufacturing.
This was passed on to me through LE channels and is trusted. Check your lot numbers guys & gals ...

For the last time, fishy or not, this was sent to me through my department email. I posted it for your safety, and nothing else. It was sent to my department for our safety. If you think the ammo is good, than use it. I am just passing on the info that was given to me.
