That is awful. Even with all the modern safety equipment, fencing, set back from the track, and such, it is still a dangerous sport. I'm not a naysayer as I truly love drag racing.
We used to run the local dirt tracks in the mid-90's and I remember watching a wheel with the axle attached come out of a car and launch off the track. It went over the wall and bounced into the pits for quite a distance. I thought for sure it was going to kill someone, but luckily no one was injured.

overall the nhra does a pretty good job with safety if you consider what they're working with.....300mph cars running on an extremely explosive fuel. They can always do more but at the end of the day people have to understand it's a dangerous sport for the fans as well as the driver. I wouldn't want to see them wall it so much that it obstructs the view of the track but nascar style catch fences probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Damn I've been like 40 ft from these cars at the starting line standing at the wall. An amazing experience. Cant imagine what it would be like to have something like this happen...

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
It was the lead (1st item shown) on the Phoenix nightly news. I race at Firebird on a regular basis (I live ~5 miles from there).

Ya, but that stuff happens so fast I doubt there was much time to react.
Looked more like he snapped an axle to me. Maybe sheered studs.
We were going down for the Stock and Super Stock racing as that's all I'm interested in anymore, but the weather never cooperated. Would have missed that topfuel incident anyway, I lost interest in watching those when they got restricted to 1,000 ft.
Still sad though, and I agree catch fences are a good idea.

Video was pulled.. But I heard about this in the news this morning. Sad.. There maybe could have been a fence imho.. Unfortunatly this will prolly cause for heavily mandated restrictions @ the tracks nation wide which usually only really affects the little guys.. I don't want folks getting hurt doing what they love, but heavier restrictions mean higher cost of operation. They should have had a fence when they're an NHRA certified track in the first place imho..

ESPN showed a video for the tire going down track. It bounced like probably 25 feet in the air then over the stand and into the pit area behind the stands. Very sad. I love nitro cars. There is no experience like it but this was very sad to hear about.

Current best: 10.60/126.8- 1998 Pontiac TA WS6
I wonder what caused the wheel to depart like that? Incorrect torque? If so, there is a crew member that needs to be strung up by his balls...

I watched the video on the news here. It appears as the weight was shifting onto that side of the dragster, power was applied putting too much stress on that one wheel, and appears to me it snapped an axle, or maybe sheered the studs. No ones fault really from my point of view. Just a freak thing.

i finally saw the video on espn. holy shit was that tire moving, and it bounced well over 10 feet in the air. now i see how it hit people past the stand and kept going.

I heard that it hit a lady in a wheel chair too.... kind of hard to move out of the way when you are stuck in a chair.... this really sucks, hopefully they don't start to make stupid restrictions that ruin the sport.
