Thread: Bidding my rear adieu!

I completed the install this evening and set the car on its wheels for the first time with the new axle. Using the wooden stands, I was able to check everything over with the suspension loaded. The panhard and sway bars both have plenty of clearance. The only issue appears to be in the tunnel -- the front corner on the top torque arm mounting plate (on top of the differential) is real tight to the driver side of the tunnel. I'll most likely knock off the edge with a grinder and simply touch it up with paint.
I still need to set my pinion angle before I can tighten all the bolts on the torque arm. I also need to figure out if I can utilize my existing driveshaft or if it needs a shorter unit (I posted a separate thread on this issue). Once the car is running again, I will perform the intial break-in by running the car with the wheels in the air both in drive and reverse for the specified period of time. I'll end the install thread with a before and after pic -- pretty dramatic difference:

AFTER -
Just noticed that the dates of the pics are exactly 2 weeks apart -- a little longer than expected, but I tried to take my time to do it right. Thank you again to everyone who helped out with all my questions.Last edited by pajeff02; 01-28-2010 at 06:09 PM.

Wow Jeff. That looks amazing. Hopefully that little bit of clearance on the TA drivers side won't be a headache for you. That is the spot though that is common for rubbing.
Make sure to post after you find about the DS length. I'm interested in knowing if you can use the same length or not.
Again, great job. Night and day difference in appearance, and probably performance and longevity as well!

Work continues after taking a break to do some underhood work on our car while I was awaiting the final batch of parts. The driveshaft arrived last week and is an impressive looking piece of hardware compared to the stocker. I didn't measure it yet, but it looks to be at least 1/2" shorter.
Of course, nothing can be easy, so I am battling some fitment issues with my tunnel mount torque arm. Looks like I will not be using the top hole in the front bracket at all.
I did take the grinder to the top plate on the rear of the new torque arm to buy some clearance. I am about certain it would have impacted the tunnel on compression of the suspension.

WHAT THE HELL??!! That is a tight squeeze!! Is that bar meant for use with a smaller diameter shaft...if there IS such a thing?

If I was using the stock driveshaft I would have a bit more clearance. I would also be able to slide the tunnel mount brace over to the driver side a bit as the mounting holes are slotted. Oh well... I enjoy challenges like this and since it's still winter I have lots of time to figure it out.
