Installing SS Ram Air Hood

I have 2000 z28 m6 and I have a k&n air intake with ls6 manifold. This summer I would like to add a ss ram air hood. If i buy the hood will i have to replace my current air intake to adapt to the hoods ram air intake? how does that work? also what kind of hp gains if any can be expected when going from a cold air intake to a ram air? Thanks guys!

The hood is mostly for looks, you can leave your intake pieces alone. I don't think you will feel or notice anything except that the SS hood my be lighter in your hands.

I didnt think it would do too much for performance. Does the scoop connect directly to the intake or is it seperated? I really want to get the hood, it really makes it look more like a muscle car. But the money would be better spent on more perfomance oriented parts. thanks.

There is no direct connection, the hood has 2 openings for the air to go towards the OEM gap under the lid, if you are running the open element k/n style with no lid it would just let the air go at it also. If you cut out under the factory airbox (fra) you get more air from under the car anyway.

my .02 says get rid of the lame kn intake, go with a lid for the stock setup and do the free ram air mod. ram air is really just a good cold air kit so if you do the fra mod you will get that benifit without spending 1k or more

i have to add something to this. i have an ss style hood that is a lil bigger and wider. not ugly tho like some aftermarket attempts. mine actually has a direct connection and does not blow it up under the stock lid

So how would I do the fra mod? Free power is always good! Would I leave the lid on the air intake and just cut out a hole? where would I cut the hole? thanx.

And to blue02z is your hood aftermarket?

yes sir. it is from a company called suncoastcreations. i think they are a sponser on here. i had the fra mod on mine before i had the hood. i wouldnt have the hood except i found it at a swap meet way back when for $85 cuz it was slightly wrecked. i just gave my fra mod to my bro. and all u do is cut the plastic that is directly under your air filter

may be wrong but that is where the extra 25 hp come from , the ram air hood and tune compared to the z/28 . z/28 cars take in hot air from engine compartment when the ss takes in cooler air from outside of engine compartment . you add blackwing 10hp more , exhaust 10hp more .

even if it doesnt provide much more power, I personally think that the ram air hood is the difference between a nice looking camaro and a mean modern muscle. As much as i love camaros, the plain hood makes the car look a little to sleek. I think if I can find one for under $400 I might buy it.

It was only 15hp, (98-00) 305hp z-28, 320hp SS or (01-02) 310hp Z-28, 325hp SS. There was no "tune" involved and some cars had slp exhaust option, fewer may have had a lid option but the hoods were never really sealed to only draw in outside air. The Trans-am WS6 factory hoods are probably more functional and can be sealed and use a better (straight) path for the air.

Our LS1 engines where downgraded from GM. Our cars were biting into Corvette (C5) sales.
The Ram Air only helps @ speeds above 100 mph. It was a gimmick for marketing. For the T/A's The WS6 hood just makes it that much more meaner. Also the WS6 package was:

17"wheels vs 16"
Ram Air Hood vs Stock
Better suspension vs stock.
and a badge

Firehawks had the SLP exhuast package.

ram air is a marketing ploy. u have to be going over 100mph and you'll see maybe like 0.3psi boost if that. there have been plenty of tests to back this up. like i said before ram air is one of the better cold air intakes because it has great access to cooler air

Don't do the FRA mod unless you want to be changing filters at every oil change. You will not see any SOTP gain either so a useless mod IMO....

The ram air i have is direct, its the 96 ram air ss, ive got it sealed pretty good and yes it really does have alot more ummph at 100 + mph, but i noticed to a 5/10 degree drop in temp too, i had the moroso cai, but when i added the airbox in conjunction with the hood i noticed a good deal of diffrence.

Yes, the LT1 SS systems were sealed and very direct. But the LS1 SS systems pale in comparison and are limited in effect with the curl around the hood air path.

see i am using the system off a 97 ram air t/a. direct and sealed but its not like omg so much more power. its a lil more peppier cuz it is a good cold air system
