Joe Montanna - Flat out winner, leadership, basically took the Chiefs to AFC Championship game single handedly when he was past his prime with with a past his prime RB(Mrcus Allen) and 2nd tier WR corps. All those game ending drives for the win.
Hate the guy but Horse face Elway would be my next pick. No question what he brought to the table. Basically the same reasons listed for Montanna. He's all Denver had in their earlier SuperBowl loss appearances. Sucked he finally got a RB and things to take the pressure off. Dude coasted then.Last edited by Huskerz1; 10-04-2009 at 09:40 PM.

To me the best isn't the one who points up the most yards, td passes, etc... it's the one who manages the game and takes their team to the superbowl and wins. So Bradshaw got my vote. 4 rings, sure he had a great defense... but they had to score points too.

John Unitas. You wanna read a great book? Read Johhny U: The Life and Times of John Unitas. Best book I've ever read.
Most of you guys just brought up stats....Well, Unitas lived in an era of the run, and became the first QB to throw for 25 tds in a season, the first to throw for 3000+ yards. He is the standard of modern QBs. He threw for a td in 47 straight games! The previous record was like 16! Hell, when he died, Peyton Manning (the guy some of you are saying is the best) asked the league if he could wear the black high-tops!
Unitas is the reason we're having this discussion. Without Johnny U, there is no Joe Namath, no Fran Tarkenton, no Brett Favre, no Peyton Manning, no Tom Brady, no Dan Marino, no Jim Kelly, and no Joe Montana.
Johnny U is the definition of the quarterback. Most NFL qb's say he's the best.

Hard not to like Johnny U. Great QB - no question, and he was far ahead of his time.
I'm not sure where you're looking up your numbers - but in '47 Sammy Baugh threw for 2,900+ yards and 25 TD's.He is another guy that threw more INT's than TD's though. For the record, I'm not saying Baugh was better than Unitas, I'm just questioning the TD thing.

That's my fault. I do believe it's 30 tds. I might be wrong though. His 47 straight games with a td pass is still unsurpassed, though. Pretty amazing.
On a side note, Joe Montana picked his number after him. Unitas wore #16 in college (louisville). Montana also wore #19 when he went to Kansas City to finish his career.
Some of his accomplishments:
- Unitas held the record for most Pro Bowl appearances (10) by a quarterback until Brett Favre tied him in 2008.
- Unitas set the standard for most wins as a starting quarterback with 118 regular season victories (since surpassed by Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, John Elway, Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning).
- Unitas was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
- Johnny Unitas' #16 is the only number retired by the football program at the University of Louisville.
- Johnny set the record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass at 47 games. This remains unsurpassed as of 2009.[10]
Unitas' grandson, J.C. Unitas, is currently a junior quarterback at Villanova University.
- Unitas once owned virtually every passing record in NFL history, most of which were surpassed by Fran Tarkenton of the Minnesota Vikings.
Pretty impressive, considering he played for the Colts in a run-oriented era.

almost 40 yrs old, has beaten every team in the league at least once and is playing at an elite level. Pretty impressive. I picked Montana, but i could have easily picked Favre too

joe montanya
plus im a chiefs fan, so thats a dead giveaway. After watching last nights game though, Favre is definately up there in second place imo. Favre is 40 in a few days, and he can still hit any reciever in a split second.. I was very impressed with his game last night

Eli is a joke. If it wasnt for the D in the superbowl along with Buress he wouldnt have done jack. Someone said something about Montana not being as good because he always had talent around him. Same goes for Eli. Hes got good receivers, and Jacobs is just a beast. IMHO he never should have been named Super Bowl MVP, because the defence won that game hands down. My vote goes to Favre, but Montana would have to be a really close 2nd.

Burress had the game winner, who threw him the ball? What happened the play before that? Eli evaded getting sacked by like 3 people. The Giants have NO recievers, there top ones are all hurt. Steve Smith is playing well but hes not an elite WR. Jacobs is huge but has been tiptoeing instead of driving through the hole. The he's got good receivers statement makes no sense at all. Thats the whole point of the game, the Qb throws the ball to the WR, TE, and sometimes the RB. The offense won that game. The Giant defense is, well Giant defense. Kickass. You dont like Eli, hell nobody seems to. But to call him a joke? The kid is tough as nails, doesnt say shit, and just plays the freakin game. Won the super bowl and was MVP, give him a lil credit
