did anyone else have a super hard time putting the plug in the hole on the slp lid?! i can't get it

Navy Blue Metallic- 2000 T/A Firehawk M6
I'm not sure my SLP lid is sealing at the rear... I put that foam strip in the back and i'm pretty sure it seats against my filter but i just feel so uneasy about it... I also didn't realize that my 2000 doesn't have an AIR tube and had to seal the hole in the side of my lid. car runs great though.
So let me get this straight. No problem getting the MAF into the lid but problem getting the rubber grommet in the lid?

If you have to plug it you got the wrong year lid for your car. My old 00 needed the hole for the A.I.R. but I can't remember if it was the first year to get filtered air or the last
