2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
What should you do 1st? trade up for an LS1!
Sorry, couldn't resist that....
I don't believe there are many choices when it comes to the intake selection for an LT1.
1st thing: What do you want to do with the car? Is it a DD or a toy? Drag race? Slalom? Is it an A4 or M6? Is it stock or are there any mods already?

I used to have a 96 Z28 vert. Traded it in on the 02.
1st thing you might want to do is weld in sub frame connectors. Not really a go fast mod but it'll let you be able to close the doors in the long run.
Next I'd work on the air intake tract (not the intake manifold) and exhaust system. Engine is just an air pump and the easier it is to inhale and exhale the better it'll run.
These are all referred to as supporting mods. Depending on where you live will determine how radical you can get.

Why an "00" or newer? Anything wrong with a 98-99?

What if the OP were to go with an LT-4 top end?

I like them all. It seems the 01-02 are the favorite because of the LS6 intakes,,,but they also came with the small truck camshaft so it's a tradeoff.
The 98 and 99 models had perimeter bolt valve covers, and in 2000 they switched to center bolts, casting numbers on the heads changed from 853's to a new casting of 241 for the 01-02 models. These are said to flow a bit better as they had a different casting process for more consistency from port to port.
Tuning is a bit different from year to year.
In the end they all run about the same though. So no real reason to get too picky on years.
Nothing wrong with the LT1's either. My wifes daily driver for many years was a 97 Z28 vert. Would still have it if someone hadn't totalled it for us.
I actually liked the car, preferred that front end over the 98 and up. LT1 ran great and got the same mileage as both of our LS1's currently do.
I actually like the low end power the LT1 had over the LS1, made it fun to squirt around town.
I'd start with a thorough tuneup, plugs wires, cap, rotor, probably replace the water pump while it's off for good measure. Then I'd look into a cold air intake, I used a Moroso on my wifes car, was one of the favorites when LT1's were the hot ticket in the mid 90's. Not sure if they still make it but there are others.
Then I'd shoot for a catback exhaust, many to choose from, just pick your sound.

I believe that 98 only had perimeter bolt valve covers, hence the different mounting for the coils (bracket vs bolt directly to the valve cover). I have both so I can compare and see the difference.
And, in 2005 the dealer gave me $11k in trade in for the 96 or I'd have it still as 1: it was 1 of 3000 verts that year and 2: it had only 50k on the odometer. I regret letting it go to this day.

I would have traded it too then for that kind of cash. Insurance only gave us something like $7500 when hers was totalled last year. It was a sweat little car and well cared for.
You may be right on the valve covers, each year seemed to have their own little querks. Even tuning each year is a little different. I've found that my 2000 has 2 VE tables, primary and secondary,,,but when I tune my 02 it only has a primary.
