Side "exit" exhaust set up
Hey guys, before i start describing, I just want to clarify this isnt side pipes, just the exhuast exiting the side before the rear tires. You will barely see it.
-I am planning to put cut-outs on the header collectors, then highflow cats, then bend some piping a little more then 90 degrees and attaching mufflers.
Please critique this set up with any imput or concerns at all.
My concerns: 1. Cut out clearance on the header collectors
2. Muffler clearance (im estimating 2.5 inches from ground)
Thanks everyone

You're going to bottom out ALL of the time. My friend has side pipes on his '98 SS and he always scrapes on the smallest of dips in the road.

it really does take away a lot of ground clearance, unless you do ALOT of cutting to notch the floor and rockers to make a tunnle for it.....i had them on my goat for awhile

Oval piping might get you a little more room but it is tight. What mufflers were you going with?

Nascar does the same thing,,,,but they use ovalized piping for clearance,,,with no mufflers,,,and they also notch the floor to tuck it in.
I wouldn't do it on a street car,,,especially a 4th gen that has little clearance anyway.
The only other way to do it and get around the floor pans is to run a pair of duals back to the rearend,,,,and then hang a pair of mufflers back there that have the inlet and outlet on the same end,,,,then you can come out right in front of the rear tires without having all that piping under the floor pans where ground clearance would be too tight.
Chrysler did it this way in 1970 with the challenger T/A and AAR Cuda. Then Ford did it later in the mid 90's with that Cobra R mustang.
You can buy the mufflers,,,but they aren't the cheapest.

Yeah I was anticipating these responses. It would just be such a light and efficient way of getting true duals. I'll have to rethink it, because I need to redo my system with cats to get by inspection anyway.. no luck here. I was originally thinking of hooker mufflers. In the Cobra R setup, would the mufflers be past our rear or before?

That would be because you are talking about a car that is designed to carry mufflers in front of the rearend,,,you have the floor clearance for such a setup to tuck things up nicely.
Plus Ford uses mufflers designed for that setup,,,as I mentioned in my earlier post. Just like Chrysler did in 1970 on the AAR and T/A.
