LS1.COM Oil Shootout
It is finally on boys and girls.
Here are some simple rules we must abide by in order for this to be fair and have a level playing field.
We will provide you (free of charge) with oil/filters and oil extraction tools, analysis kits.
You must maintain your cars tire pressure, oil levels and a clean air filter.
You must agree to follow all instructions to the letter.
You must report all data requested, per the instructions. This will include mileage (weekly), oil usage, track runs etc.
You must document any and all observations such as engine "noise", smoothness et al. I want perceptions and butt dyno observations.
You must mail your sample to the lab at your expense. Roughly $5 bucks.
I will provide each participant with a detailed instruction sheet.
We will run Amsoil SSO 0-30
................Shaeffers 10-30
................Pennzoil Platinum 10-30
Each oil will be run twice. The UOA will be taken the second OCI. This insures one oil does not affect the other oil from any residuals left.
Oil filter(s) will be NAPA Gold
All oil will be shipped in sterile unmarked containers. You will not know what oil is which
I want to start June 15th.
I need 3 volunteers. You must agree to all the above. Tell me in this thread about your car. How many miles a month you drive it. Where you are.
Thank you to AMSOIL, SHAFFER'S, SOPUS, NAPA for making this possible.
Participants:
1. SMWS6TA
2. LS1Jason

I would, but my car only sees a few hundred miles a month. I hit the every 3 month changes well before mileage changes.

What sort of miles per week are you looking for? I'm game, but may not meet the requisite mileage.

I'd like to see 100 miles a day or close to it. Trucks/cars either one. Modified or stock. Level playing field. LS/LT either one.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
I don't even drive 100 miles a week. Living 2 miles away from work has it's advantages.
I drive the 98 all week and the 02 only on the weekends.

We'll do 3K UOA's. So 6K per oil brand specific. It will be a year long exercise.

If you're looking for trucks I have a 96 Chevy 1500, drive it about 120 miles a day, about 90 of which is highway. It has 118,000 miles, original motor/trans. Completely stock. I live in Rockwall, Tx and drive to Denton daily.

Ok -- for a DD my wife runs a 2004 Dodge Stratus about 75 miles per day M-F back and forth to work, plus whatever on evenings and weekends. Includes both highway and city driving.
Car is a 2.4 liter 4 popper with right around 80,000 on it, automatic transmission, garage kept. Car is well maintained, has no issues, and burns no oil between 3,000 - 5,000 mile oil changes.
Current oil is Castrol GTX 5W-30, which is the brand that has been used in it since we acquired the car with 11,900 on the clock. This is the only vehicle in our fleet that would come close to your mileage expectations. All maintenance has been logged.

Hmmm. Not even a bite from Sarge. I was looking forward to a tongue lashing for posting up a non-LS/LT.Last edited by pajeff02; 05-19-2009 at 03:53 AM.

My 9" will be in car tomorrow. I will be game for this. 100 miles a day might be alittle stretch for me though.

Vehicle: 2002 Holden Commodore SS
Engine: 5.7 LS1 and A4
Mods: Tri Y's, 2.5" twin exhaust, Mafless intake, PCM edit
Mileage: 120000kms (74500 miles)
Driven: Daily approx 200kms (124 miles) per week. Occasional track use.
I would like to know which oil performs best when cold. My old girl is subjected to frequent heavy accelleration through traffic immediately after cold start up.
If you are happy to send the goop across the pond Sarge, I'm happy to send the samples back. I'll talk to my post office about mailing small samples of oil.
