We had one of these at the pool. It's called a velvet ant, AKA cow killer.
The females are wingless and are able to sting. The winged males can not sting. They are pretty but I don't recommend petting it.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
FYI: Wasps (et al) are cousins of ants. Actually it's the other way around as ants are descendants of wasp type flying critters. They just shed their wings a few million years ago.

wasp, they don't do any real harm unless you piss them off of course. Always attack at dawn or dusk.

Just to give yall a little tip, nothing kills bee's faster then Brake Klean. Raid, Wasp and Hornet Foam, those just piss em off. Brake Klean take em right out of the air, dead. Ive been fighting Carpenter Bees for the last few weeks (they come about 3/4 to 1 inch in length and are super aggressive, but strangely don't sting, they bite) cause they come after my kids when they play on the porch.

FOR SALE 2000 Z28 M6
It's pretty much Raw Awesome

I just read a thing on carpenter bees. They're harmless for the most part. The males are the aggressive ones that will investigate any movement near the nests but they don't have stingers. The females can sting but rarely do. My neighbors shed is full of these damn things. They bore a perfectly round hole too. He usually sits out there in the evenings with a tennis racket as entertainment.

I get bee/wasp spray from work that kills those little bastards on contact. It's like some kind of nerve toxin and it'll knock them right out of the air.
I took out a whole hive with 3 bottles last summer. I lifted the lid off of an underground utility box, after kicking it to see if I could stir them up, nothing came out so I just opened the lid and it was like a sea of yellow and black. I didn't even get stung...

Haha! The boss doesn't wanna hear some little pussy story about being scared of bees. His motto is, "If you call me and tell me you can't do something you better be damn sure you can't do it, cause if I have to come out there and I can do it I'll make your life miserable." So yea, I pretty much had no choice.
It's like Mr. Miyagi/Grandpa in the movie 3 Ninja's says "Never pick a fight unless you're sure you can win." I try and go by that same philosophy
