Someone on avs pm'ed me about some BIC Acoustech HT-88s for 150 a piece. He has six, so i figured i'd buy 2 for 300.

    What do you guys think?

why not stay with athena's. From the looks of the spearkers you posted you have room to put bigger speakers. You should go with asf-2 for your fronts check this out on ebay

in your price range too... might even find someone that is close to you and pick them up/save on shipping.

For your center you should get the as-c1 and use the as-b1's for the rear surrounds.

They are insanely priced, but yes i have been looking hard at those. There's gotta be somewhere that sells those cheaper.

Everyone seems to be recommending something different so it's hard to make up my mind.

Idk if I wanna pay 325 for a the two front speakers and not even have a nice sub yet...even though they are ported, they might put out some bass...I would like the lower bass notes though..not just 50-100hz

well cheaper is always ebay. Since you already have the b-1's and your willing to sepend 300 on fronts alone the f2's would be good. I usualy see them on ebay for 200-250 range but that depends on shipping too. You could always look into the f-1's which are basically the same as the f-2's but only has one larger driver and not 2. You could even go with the as-b2 for the fronts if you wanted to and thoes are usually around 150 for the pair. Mind you the b2's won't go real low like the f1 or f2's would but who cares if you got a good sub to take care of the lows..

I could just look this up...but you seem to know already.

What's the difference between the b1s and b2s...maybe get b2s and a good sub, and that center channel on ebay.

difference between the b1 and b2 is the main driver. In the b1 its a 5 1/4 inch woofer and the b2 is a 6 1/2" woofer. The b2's will play a bit deeper bass than the b1's

one thing, dont worry too much on how low the front or any of the other speakers can go. You do want them to atleast play an 80hz signal, anything lower than that would be sent to the subwoofer provided you set up your reciever right. I too have a yamaha and you can set the crossover frequency to match your speaker so if your running small cube type speakers you can set the crossover so that all the bass goes to the sub by raising the crossover point. Crossover point simply means that for any given point you set (say you set it to 80hz) anything with a frequency 79hz and less will be sent to the sub which basically makes the fronts being able to play sounds under 80hz pointless since they wouldnt see that frequency due to the crossover cutting them off and sending it to the sub.. Having fronts that play real low will really come into play when you play music and only use 2 channel stereo and that type of thing..

I've got the as-f2 for my fronts and the as-c1 for my center. I have the b1 for surround but don't use them (weird room shape means no good place to put them). I've got a Tempest sub that I don't even use unless I'm watching an action film. You're gonna want to get a nice set of fronts because you'll keep them forever. I've had mine for about 5 years. Home Theater is just like cars, you get that bug to buy more stuff. Just buy one component at a time and build your collection up to a great system. Don't go cheap because you'll regret it later.

Thats my sub, but I'd LOVE to upgrade to an HSU 3.3. My sub fills up my room quite nicely and has no probs knockin shit off my wall, if I choose too, haha. HSU's are just in a whole nother league, from what i've been told.
I have a Harman Kardon 254 reciever and AV123 ELT system. Reciever is new but someday I'll upgrade the speakers to prolly a Paradigm or Aperion system. I just need to win the lotto.
Kind of amazing what a good 10" sub does, eh? I was a little leary bc back in the day the only way I knew how to get better bass was a bigger speaker. Like two front speakers with 15s.

I think the OP is getting the idea to not go cheap on the sub.

Also, on the other side of the wall where my sub is, I have some outdoor speakers. Mounted high on the house. If the sub, on the other side of the wall, is on, there is a huge difference when the music's playing. Those little all weather speakers sound soooo much better with the sub on. Bass goes thru the wall.

The reason I wanted to go cheap on the sub, because just about anything out there is probably gonna sound better than a powered aiwa sub

Well, sure it might. But, say you spend $200 on this cheap sub, that you're not going to be happy with in two years. Well, now you've got to spend $400-$500 to get a good sub, or build your own. Now you've got a good sub, but you've spend $700 to get it, when $700 could buy you a sick nasty sub. If you don't have the cash now, just wait. Build up your system one piece at a time. My order of importance is this:

    Receiver
    Fronts
    Center
    Sub
    Surrounds

    300 for a decent receiver
    300 for decent fronts
    300 for a decent sub
1-200 for a decent center channel

Thx for the advice, i'll figure out if i wanna spend my money or not

You don't have to spend that much on a good receiver. Check out ecost.com, they have Denon, Onkyo, etc...

    For example:

    Denon AVR688 - $169 - 75 watts/channel.

I did end up using ecost. But they were out of the denon avr 590. I ended up saving more money than I thought I could and pretty much went all out on my theater system. I posted it up in another thread. I am on my phone...so it'll be hard to list all I have done.

Ok just finished hooking everything up! hehehe I heard the xf-48 vs the martin's and the xf just blows the martin's away I was there for a good 2 hours. I am truly happy with the set-up I always wanted a Bose but they are not even THX level....I watched a few blu ray's and even the wife was really getting into it. I never knew how good klepsch was till today.
