Why would you want a language that doesn't evolve over time? I understand why you think is is merely a degredation of the language, but you should also consider the idea that it may be good for our language to evolve and grow with us

Alot of people from the south have thier own language and slang. Just like alot of people up north have a bitchey attitude, and seem to always try to find something wrong with anyone.

I mean seriously... Ask ANYONE who's interviewed people for good paying jobs if that kind of dialect helps applicants out any.
Would you AXE the hiring manager at a Fortune 500 company what their benefits package is like?
Would you tell the hiring manager at a Fortune 500 company why you WAS FIXIN' to get that job?
I doubt it, and if you would, I doubt you'd be their first pick.Last edited by BillyT; 03-01-2006 at 07:10 PM.

Anymore isn't ebonics. Ebonics is lumping together slang into a named category, most of which has no foundation -meaning it isn't a new take on old language. I'd call it hip hop pig latin. . .

03-01-2006, 07:24 PM #30I have no alerts under my name. Was not really insulting you was thinking why would someone who is supposed to be so smart, able to debate a gerbil into thinking it is a dog waste his time with the useless internet world. Put your powers to good use Billy. Go teach california youngsters...make your own demonic army and stop playing Internet goblin.

Anymore = No Longer
Saying, "I used to have poor verbal skills, but I don't anymore" makes perfect sense.
Saying, "I used to have poor verbal skills, but they're much better anymore", makes no sense whatsoever.

The majority of the population is poorly educated in the correct use of the engilsh language. It is all too common to type words the way they sound due to a lack of knowledge of the actual use of words. Should've sounds like should of, not should have. The average person will not think twice about how they should actually spell it. I type should have, but I say should've. I talk like a dumb hick, because I am one. I am very much so a perfectionist and if you have noticed in any thread I always try to capitalize and punctuate. I talk on instant messenger programs very often and use correct grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation almost 100 percent of the time. I know, 100 should have been spelled out as one hundred, but who cares. I do think about that stuff though, and I have trouble leaving it like that sometimes. I agree that the lack of education among Americans is annoying, especially when it manifests itself in what we would call the simplest of tasks -verbal and written communication. Unfortunatly for you, most people aren't like me. It is a trivial matter and most people treat it that way.

Oh yeah, although the evolution of our language is due in part to the under-educated misuse of words, I still think it's a good idea to grow with it. Don't oppose it because you don't think it makes sense, learn it
-
03-01-2006, 07:49 PM #36I will always strive to learn what makes the most sense.

To me, that's counterproductive. And a damn shame.

Not learning the ways of society is counterproductive. Our language in it's purest form never made a lot of sense, but it's what you were taught so you think it makes sense. The newest forms of it may seem foriegn, but they are no more foreign than many of the forms of words you use today were to our ancestors 50 or 100 years ago

Oh, and I have presented this to three english teachers, two previous and one current, and they all agree that the usage is correct. So, that is two doctorates and a high school/college english teacher with 20 years teaching experience. One Dr. got her degree at LSU and the other somewhere on the East coast, so don't even pull the regional bullshit on this one.
