I would put it in your rainy day fund then, imo. Cant be too safe, especially when the economy is the way it is.

Or at least some intelligent investments.

Plan on about $2,500, less if you get a 9 inch disassembled and put it together yourself. Install is not too difficult if you can work on cars at all.

I picked up a Strange Dana S60 for $2300 and installed it myself.

yeah its more expensive then building up a 10bolt, but the strange will never break. and for some reason if it does dana 60 parts are cheap!

the install is easy... if you have the garage space and standard tools

There's no such thing as building up a ten bolt. If you can't afford a Strange or Moser, get long tubes or something. Gears in a 10 bolt is a waste imo.

Seriously, don't even mess with the 10-bolt. It's worthless. If you want gears, but can't afford a 9" or 12-bolt...wait until you can.

There have been plenty of threads, in the drivetrain section about people putting 3.73 gears in a 10 bolt with NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER! My car ISN'T a daily driver, it ISN'T a drag car, and I barely drive it on weekends! I've never had problems with the 10 bolt for 105,000 miles....I only want to do the gears to give the car a little more pep!....

That's fine if you're never gonna drag race. I said I was never gonna drag mine either and wasted like $500 on gears in the stocker and ended up swapping the whole thing out later anyway. Nothing's more fun than dropping the clutch at 6,500 on slicks at the track. I see your an A4 anyway so you can get by longer without a decent rear. 6 speed it is almost mandatory.

Completely agree with the gears. Long tubes would get my vote with your mods everytime.

Do ever feel the S60 is overkill? Are you A4 or M6?
