well durring the 90s here in wayne county, lot of shady shit went down in the sheriffs dept. stolen guns found their way to the officers hands instead of the owner who had them taken out of his house. this happened a lot, back then. This doesnt happen much anymore tho.

The gun is more than likely only worth 100 bucks. Someone might even give you a buck and a half. Use common sense, is any type of trouble with the law worth a hundred bucks?

I know being honorable is looked on as stupid by some, but I beleive that there are right and wrong things you do in life. The old good vs evil thing. Call the cops, they will come out and get it. If it ends up in some coppers collection then that copper really doesn't understand good and bad either.

My granddady always told me if your going to do something stupid or illegal #1 the pay out better be worth it and #2 do it by yourself and then keep you mouth shut. Hey just my humble opinion.

The smart money says, have the cops do whatever the hell they want with the weapon. If you are that concerned about home defense, go get yourself a sig p220 (or another weapon of your choosing) and call it a day.

If you want an additional level of protection, load your LEGALLY OWNED weapon with 2 rubber bullets and the rest with JHPs and then you can tell whomever, "I shot him with rubber bullets sir/ma'am but the psycho kept coming so I pumped his ass full of hollowpoints. I was in imminent danger of great bodily harm or death."

But seriously...stay legal. I like my freedom and I assume you do too.

Turn it in to the police. They will background check it. If theres no problems and no claims on it it will be returned to you. Same thing happened to my cousin a few years ago. Found an AK in a field now has an AK

That's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. If you pull a gun on someone you better make damn sure you have the capability to kill them with the first shot. And legally, even with rubber bullets, you must be justified to use lethal force in order to shoot so it might as well be the real thing.

yeah I have seen some of the worst advice on this thread......probably the worst since I have been on this site.......good thing this is a car site and not a site for guns

IF it was left there by accident, the previous owner might well report it stolen when he/she determines it is missing, thus putting our fellow LS1'er in possession of a stolen weapon. If the DA wants to prosecute him on something anyway, then thats just crazy.

I'm a collector, and I wouldn't think twice about shelving it my safe. There are registered guns, and there are unregistered guns. Laws that infringe on our rights and privacy grow more powerful every year it seems, and the day may come when they knock on our doors for our registered guns.

(Of course, being that you have said you are a law enforcement official, you won't agree with me on this, and that is completely fine with me)

Your best argument would be that turning in the gun could help solve a cold case. But considering where the gun was found this is highly unlikely this time around.

Well what about the dozens of firearms for sale every day in the classified section of the paper?

The thousands of guns that trade hands every year at gun shows? Should all these guns, too, be turned in to the nanny state before they change hands?

if you were smart you would have them checked out before an exchange.......to each his own, but to just assume a firearm is clean is not the smartest decision. I dont know I just would never try to buy a gun through the classifieds. I would always buy it new.

Yeah, they'll be so enthusiastic about coming to a duplex to retrieve a gun. Wow. A police officer showing up with a camera? In Kansas?

Obviously the original poster is probably at this point going to turn the gun in.

However, I think this discussion is turning more towards a legal debate. I would love ONE example of a story (anywhere in the United States) where someone found a gun, and was later convicted of a murder linked to that gun.

Now in New York, you can go to jail for 3 years if you are found in possession of an "unregistered" handgun. But this guy is in Kansas for God's sake.

Try to find out who was living ther before you moved in, and return it back to them. You can get in alot of trouble without trying to find the rightful owner. Good luck.

I love my M&P .40...extremely accurate with low recoil and fits my hand like a glove. I like the XD but it doesn't feel right in my hand. I'm looking at a springfield 1911 TRP but it's like $1,800 so I dunno...i'd be too afraid of scratching it.
