Orion, I like what your dad and grandpa extolled as needs for a car. Most say air rather than fuel/spark at the right time. You really need air...but fuel/spark time is missing more than air I'd venture.

I have seen a couple air filters (turned air dams) that really jacked up a car. But it is always a great side-splitting laugh to find that.

Seriously, thank you Orion! Everyone on here has been great. I hope to have it running over the weekend. We all know what a chore it is to change all 8 plugs!

She is running again! It was the plugs. Changed all eight today and she fired right up. I threw in some new Ac Delco Irididiums. The were out of the NGK's. Thanks for that write up on octane boost, that was definetly the cure. Well, at least I can say I cleaned out the whole fuel system, checked every relay and fuse, and now have all new plugs! I have to go put more gas in her now so that I dont foul the new plugs. I lost about a half a tank in my driveway checking all those fuel lines. Thank again to all of you, you all are GREAT and even though I did the work, you guys fixed my car!

    Thanks for posting the outcome.

I'm glad you got the problem resolved.

At least the plugs are easy to change!

    Orion,

Has anyone ever thought about making a subsection to General Help. Like "Troubleshooting." Just for people going about their normal use and something broke, quit working, etc.

Additionally, ever considered a "Discrepancy From". Where we could ask for entries that often takes days of posting to get the info. Like:

1.) When does problem occur? If problem occurs under various conditions is it more notable in one of the following!(Specific speed, RPM, gear, starting, take off, hot outside, raining, in a turn, idling, going up/down hills.)
2.) Before problem began, did you do anything abnormal for your driving habits?
3.) Before problem began, did you perform any maintenance or service, including minor things? (Changed plugs, topped fluids, bled clutch/brakes, added washer fluid, just got gas)
4.) Did problem just appear, or has it been an increasing condition over time?

There may be a few more pertinent questions? But getting these answered up front could really shorten the process in assisting.

I wonder about things like this because getting this kind of info has always been the key to narrowing down the search from 60 things to 2 or 3. When I was in the Air Force (electrical-environmental sys tech) the Flight Engineers would enter something in the log like, lost generator 3, or gen 3 INOP. If there wasn't a good Crew Chief there when the bird landed or we didn't get there before the crew left to ask conditional questions...we knew it was a long night coming.

Also I'd put together a Trouble-Fault Matirx if there was interest. (It would take a while.) Using old posts to collect problems that have been posted and what turned out to be the underlying cause. Members could review it and add, "I've also seen this cause that." Then rank the potential causes by probability.

I could put something together like that but I doubt most would use it. I would like to maybe do some searches and link some of the more popular issues into the same thread and then sticky that. I'll work on doing that this week.
I do like for people to post up their problems though because it seems every thread is a little different and the outcome is usually a little different. It also depends a lot on the description and I'll use this thread as an example. It started out with a fuel pressure issue but by the time you're done it ends up being a spark plug issue. So if someone stumbled onto the thread and didn't take the time to read it all they'd have their fuel system tore apart before you knew it.

Some of that is because there are different ways of getting there! And I like the threads with more thought into them, and wouldn't want to lose that. (It is an insight to trouble thinking.)

Maybe something like, for DD's that need to get to the fix right now!

Glad to hear it was something relatively simple like spark plugs. Still, tho, I wonder why they fouled. It could have been all the additive to the fuel you put in, or it still could be something else. Like a bad/intermittent CTS failure, MAF, overfueling from a bad pressure regulator or other things.

Like I said earlier, tho, we used to get GMs with 3.8s in them towed in during the winter for no starts, and a lot of times all I had to do was put a new set of spark plugs in them and found no other issues. And they did not come back again.
