Don't complain about shipping on New Years eve. I have been in the Army for 19 years now, 3 tours in Iraq, 1 to Kuwait and 2 to Germany. I have missed so many Christmas and New Years I lost count. I will be retiring in a year so I will leave it up to you young guys. What MOS are you going in?

Meh, my complaining is mostly for show, I didn't even have any parties to go to if I wasn't shipping
Well, you ought to like my MOS.... 19k (for those of yall not in the army... thats an M1 Abrams Crewman - or a tanker if you will)
I think I'm going to be glad I chose it personally.

I don't get it?
I've heard there is an additional training period for a few weeks for the "lucky ones" who get tapped in my OSUT for the SEP... personally, I'm hoping to. As a matter of a fact, if its something that can be earned in OSUT, then I will be going for it.... but alas, I don't know if its decided random or otherwise.
Whats up Marine? I considered 3 branches... The navy was automatically out for me... I don't like boats(oops... "ships") that much. I lived on one when I was a child for a year, and I don't want to do that again.
I leaned towards the Air Force initially(a few years back), but when I found out I couldn't get a security clearance, that washed me out of any MOS I would have enjoyed...
So, between the army and the marines, it came down to one simple thing for me.... I'm just not that hooah... not all the time. I couldn't... no thats not true, I wouldn't be able to deal with complete lack of individuality and and ownership of you by your superiors. (don't flay me if you think I am wrong here, I'm going off first hand accounts of people I know, including 2 that served in the marines and then renlisted into the army instead.
While I understand that is still what I have to expect in the army, I have every reason to believe that its not that bad. I can deal with authority, I can deal with doing things "the army way", I can deal with the discipline... What I won't deal with is a complete lack of individuality and control of my life. I need that 5% to still be me.
Meh, maybe thats silly, but its how I feel.
So, MSG, how much do you think my opinion in going to change by the time I'm through with training?

You should be trained on the M1A2 SEP Tank in OSUT since that is the only tank in the active Army now. They may just train you on the M1A2 tank and then send you to your unit to get on the job training on the SEP tank.
As far as the Army compared to the Marines, Marines are great and are needed for the team. All the forces together make a team and without teamwork, we wouldn't have the Military that we have today. We are all brothers in arms and we all have to fight as a team. You are not owned by your superiors but you will have to learn discipline and how to follow orders. If you cannot do any of the two, the Military is not for you. Once you get experence and learn the Army ways, you will grow into a leader and not a follower.
Don't worry about OSUT, They will teach you the basic stuff. You will learn everything at your unit and it takes experence to know your job. When you finish OSUT you will arrive at your new unit wherever it may be and you will be heading to Iraq. I don't mean to scare you but that is what will happen.Last edited by WS6ICK; 12-27-2008 at 12:28 AM.
