Odd sound from under the hood

My car makes a very odd whining sound under the hood that increases or decreases in pitch depending on engine rpm. It does it at all speeds and at idle. I can't figure out what might be causing it. I intend to sell the car soon and I am worried that I am about to encounter a catastrophic mechanical failure. The sound is similar to a power steering pump going bad, but it isn't the pump because the sound doesn't change if I steer, it's strictly RPM based.

sounds like the PS pulley... could be going out... i mean the bearing

Could be the belt or belt tensioner.

probably the belt...if not then try the tensioner....it could also be the alternator pulley

Its gonna be in the accessory drive belt area 9 times outta 10.

Mine started doing this a couple of nights ago. Sounds like a damn procharger or something.

Yep, mine sounds like it's supercharged too, just minus the extra power

Mine does it 2 but seems to do it more when its cold.

Yeah I listened for it all last night. Piston Slap is getting pretty horrible as well as more noises. Damn 20 degree weather. Mine goes away when its warm.

Most likely a belt. Change both of them.

Mine does it more when i turn, so is it my pump for me?

Should i try getting it flushed?

hhmm..mine does the same high pitch whine...both belts were supposedly replaced recently though?
Anything else to consider...doesnt bother me but if something is on the way out I would like to have a heads up.
