Drag Racing Tips for the Track
I have a 2000 WS6 with all the bolt ons plus heads/cam install. I am running the stock A4 with external cooler, 3500 rpm stall comverter and 3.73 gears. Usually at the track after staging, I will stall the car at 2500 rpm and let it launch at the green light and I have no traction problems at all. Will my 1/4 mile times be better if I just let it idle and punch the gas at the green light? I am also running Mickey Thompson DR (275 40R 17). What will the difference be if I run the same tire but a 295 45R 17? I think this is a taller and wider tire. Thanks to anyone who can give me advice. BTW, my best time is 12.7 1/4 mile at 109 mph in high altitude (over 7000 ft).

Really depends on the individual car. But leaving just off idle and standing on the gas will flash the converter a little more and tend to hit the tires a little harder.
My chevelle runs it's best using this method.
Other cars may run quicker if you bring the rpms up more,,,,just something you have to experiment with.

For most every car doing the burnout in second gear is plenty,,,even for cars with 4.56-5.13 gears...
If you run a gear such as 2.73 - 3.23 you may get away with using first gear only.
Alot depends on the tire you run and how they respond to heat. Some just need cleaned off while others work well only after producing a smoke fest...
I have a car I run 4.56's in,,,and find that a second gear burnout (muncie 4-speed) is plenty,,,,about 4-5 seconds, once smoke starts to whisper off the tires I let the car roll forward out of the water for a few feet and shut it down.
I do the same for the chevelle with 4.10 gears. I find that my 4th gen with 3.23 gears is just fine with a simple 1st gear burn out just to clean the tires off while letting it roll to the line.
Everyone has their own technique for a particular car....

Generally speaking... I heat my BFG dr and M/T slicks the same way... roll through the water to a dry spot, line lock, hold at 3k rpm till it starts to bog and then pull up. I launch @ 5k w/o problems!
I learned the hard way not to throw water into the wheelwells...

Arctic White- 1999 Pontiac Formula
I have full exhaust, 3.23 gears and a TCI 3500 and M/T street radials. After 200 + track passes I can say that for me stalling to 2000 gives me the best 60' and ET.
If I flash right off idle I usually get a 1.72 - 1.75 60'. But at 2000 rpm's (give or take a few hundred) I net 1.65 - 1.72 60's. There is something else to consider as well. By stalling up to 2000+ you are preloading the drivetrain. This in turn reduces the shock the rearend feels when you launch. This is huge while trying to preserve the fragile life of a 10 bolt.
I would stall it up some on every launch. But that's just me.
