help with an oil question
buddy i work with was having a reall bad sound coming from his engine, and told me his check oil light has been on for 2 months, so i told him id take a look at it for him, turns out when i drained the oil he only had about 1/4-1/2 a quart of oil, yes, only half a quart of oil......i was shocked he didnt spin a bearing, but anyway, i drain the oil through the plug then go to take the filter off, thing wont budge, 3 other guys tried, nothing, he needed the car so we threw the fresh oil in there and the sound went away but i know he cant reuse the oil filter, esp. since we dented the shit out of it tryng to get it off, my question is, he needs a new filter no matter what correct? and number 2, can they save the fresh oil we put in there
-thanks

Yea he needs a new filter, if worse come to worse punch it through with a long scewdriver or punch, just be really careful. As for saving the "new oil" since he ran it so low, don't bother and put more fresh stuff in to clean out any debris and give this motor at least a few more weeks to live.

I would go ahead and swap the filters out asap, considering you crushed the filter when yall tried removing it.
You can save the old oil, just let it sit for about an hour or so and most of the oil will collect in the pan.
What i reccomend is going out to your local parts store and find a metal filter wrench, looks like a cup and will cost a few bucks, if you want the cheap route use a screw driver or punch and go straight through the filter and start turning, beware its gonna make a mess but it will work.

If you remove the filter, only the oil in the filter is lost; the rest stays in the oil pan. Just fill a new filter with oil (takes a few minutes for the oil to saturate the filter element) and then install it.

Get the filter off. 2ndly.....Get a strong solvent engine flush and some cheap ass oil....WolfsHead 30 wt...I don't care....Pour the solvent flush with new filter and cheap ass oil....let it idle for 15 minutes.....drain that shit out of there....change filter....refill with cheap ass oil again.....drive it this time for about 15-20 minutes.....drain it and change filters again.....refill with Castrol GTX 10-30 and new filter ( NAPA/AC Delco/Purolator)...drive with that for about 1500 miles.....then change filters and oil ( whatever oil he is gonna use going forward) and resume normal 3-5K Oil change intervals. Slap his ass upside the head for letting this happen in the first place.

Fuck that guy!!! Any body who doesn't change the oil when the light has been on for 2 month doesn't deserve to drive.
Tell that retard to get a bike.
Was this the same ass from the Mini-van forum?

ya, he doesnt really care about his car, and i told him he needed to get his oil filter changed regardless and he doesnt really care about that either haha, but he bought me microfiber applicator pads and a microfiber drying towel for doing it for him so i dont really care either haha,
how would he lose 4.5 quarts tho? he was only 800 miles over his oil change (3,800) since his last change

My TA sits about 25 days out of each month, but I still keep check on the oil in it and the other 5 I have. I just don't see how a man can be so sorry.I can see maybe his wife or girlfriend going some thing like that, but not a man. If he don't care no more than that about the car, it will happen again. Next time he may not be so lucky. Get the filter off and get the oil out. Their maybe metal in the oil now that it has run through the old filter.

yea i thinking losing all that oil would be a bigger problem then the oil filter , beside he might need a good reason to buy a New car ,

get a oil filter wrench. pull it off... change it. Then slap him acros the face with the old filter.( he'll remember to come for next oil change).
as for how he lost all the oil, are there any leaks around? when you start the car is there a bit of black smoke sometimes? if so he could be burning oil. and if neither... check his coolant, but lets hope it didnt end up there.

He's either leaking oil or burning it. Either that or there's some sort of oil fairy that robs you during the middle of the night.
If he has no oil spots below his car, chance are its being burned, and you didn't see any smoke from the exhaust because there was so little left.
