White- 1999 Transam WS6
Hi! Is this a real WS6? (vin inside)
Hi, ls1.com!
I'm currently looking to buy an ls1 bird in 1-2 months and have found a pretty nice ws6 or so they say. I was wondering if there is anybody that can check this VIN and tell me if its a real ws6 or not.
VIN: "2G2FV22G5W2231831".
I know about checking the RPO sticker on the side of the door, but I have yet to see the car in person and was just hoping somebody out there can tell me the validity of this ws6 before I physically see it.
Thanks!

I'm thinking Pontiac/ GM could answer that question real quick.

Unfortunatly the vin doesn't tell if it's a ws6 or not. According to the GM service manuals. My 01 didn't either. Other then the rpo in the door check for the other ws6 options. I highly doubt someone would go through the trouble to get all the true ws6 parts to clone one.

you got to look closer mine was just a ta new the aftermarket hood was on it when I bought it (no badges though) and was not functional. they told me it was not functional though.I have since made it functional and then some.. as long it is a v8 i wouldnt worry too much.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Here are pictures of the car.
It's a '98 with 49k miles and they're asking $14,999
Anything look odd/out of place on the car? (other than a blurry back pic :/)
It does seem to have the rear end ws6 badge, but those are pretty easy to duplicate.

you can call any GM dealer service department and ask them to run a VIS (Vehicle Inquiry Service), all they need is the VIN. The first page of the report will give all the RPO codes.
Car looks clean in the pics... but sounds kinda high for a 98. I've seen 02's for that price. If I had to do it all over I wouldn't buy anything but an 01 or 02 due to the LS6 intake, EGR delete, etc.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum

I've heard that before, but I can't seem to be able to find one with lower mileage/lower price around my area.
Location: NYC, checking about 50-100miles around me, so that includes most of NJ and parts of PA.
I've found an '00 transam with around 32k miles for about $15k in PA, but in the pictures it seems a bit more beat up than this ws6.
Anybody care to see if they can find a decent ls1 bird around NYC for $10-15k?
Must be stick

Black- 1998 Trans Am WS6 'Vert
No "Ram Air" decals on the hood is suspicious. If it had the SOTL exhaust on it, that would nearly confirm it's a real '98 WS6, but it's clearly an aftermarket exhaust. Check under the hood, if the lower airbox isn't raised, that would be a sure sign of a fake. If it wasn't black, I could check the VIN, so the only way of knowing for sure if you can't check the door decal would be to run the VIN through a dealer's computer to obtain a list of that car's RPO codes and look for "WS6".

Having no ram air decal on the hood is no big deal. Alot of people take them off. It looks like it does have the 17" ws6 rims. It looks like you have the same car unavailability as I do up here, causing higher prices on the ones that do come up. I would get it as long as it has the lower air box is raised. Also when you open the hood you can look at the exit of the ram air holes in the hood to see if its factory cut. You will have no exposed fiberglass around the opening. Oh yeah, the vin will only tell you if it's a formula or trans am. When the dealer pulls my car up. It only comes as a trans am, and my gm service manuals confirm that in the break down for my 01.

Thanks for the advice guys, been helpful. Should be going to see the car on Sunday, but I may not be able to buy it yet. Hopefully it's not gone in like a month if its a decent buy.
Any other advice/things to look out for?

No Gm warrenty work ever performed on this vehicle. It was never taken back to a dealer after the purchase for any document warrenty claims
It was also originally a lease vehicle. Unfortunatly I can't tell how many owners without a car fax?
DEFINATLY A WS6 by VIN #
Hope that helps.Last edited by BIGREDZ; 05-15-2008 at 07:16 PM.

that very well could be they just purchased it after the lease. I would still ask for a copy of the carfax report!

If it was originally a lease vehicle, how can it only have had one owner? Is the current owner a car leasing agency?

If the original leasee purchase the vehicle after the lease the vehicle is still considered one owner. This is because during the lease both GMAC and the owners names are on the title. Once the vehicle is purchased the NY DMV would list it a new registration but if the address didn't change it would still be considered one owner.
The only reason I know this about NY even though I live in MI. is the 02 WS6 that I just bought was from NY and was listed the same way with GM's V.I.S. sys. and CARFAX. The main reason I mentioned that it was origanally a lease was so you know that it wasn't listed to a FLEET account.

when you go look at it look on the driver door code sticker, if you see WS6 in there somewhere in the middle, you should be good.
