Premium around here averages 18 cents more than regular. It typically takes me 13 gallons to fill up. 13x.18=$2.34 savings for using regular. Not even 1 gallons worth of gas. I will keep using premium.

A few months ago I started putting 87 in cause I'm used to putting it in my wife's vehicle. Only put about 3 gallons in or so then I switched it back to 93 and didn't have any problems but I was wondering the same thing.

This has been talked about to death.
Chances are good that going to a lower octane may cause detonation if you lean on the car routinely..
It may not be audible, because the car does a good job of pulling the timing out before damage results.
Problem with that is the this will hurt mileage slightly and performance suffers as well. If it senses knock it will learn a new timing curve taking timing tables from the low octane table,,,so the above happens.
Putting around town at light throttle may not change anything.
But why bother anyway. The difference in price from high octane to low octane doesn't even give you a gallon of gas,,,,as it's been figured already (thanks Berger21) So why take the chances.
I'm willing to bet if you dig around your couch you could find enough loose change to cover the difference
Gas here for 94 octane is $4.25 gallon yesterday. Been buying it for 25+ years and I'll keep doing so until Sunoco quits making it.

Yeah but over years of fill ups I'm sure it'd make a substantial difference.

Naaa,,doesn't bother me. I'm actually at an advantage here. Since I've been using it for the better part of a 1/4 century,,,filling up 6 of our cars with it to be exact,,,I really haven't felt the dent in the pocket book that others have.
Since I have been paying higher than average price than most of the general public all these years,,,,We are somewhat used to it anyway

I'm not saying I'm going to switch over. I want to do what's best for my car and I'm sure putting 93 octane is what's best. If I can't afford the gas I shouldn't have the car right? But it is getting ridiculous being over $4 per gallon now w/ no end in sight in terms of how high it will go.
