Red- 1998 Pontiac Trans Am WS6
authentic WS6??? how do you know?
I was just curious. How do you know if you have a true WS6 vs a normal trans am. Besides the obivious; bigger wheels, ram air hood, and emblems on the back. Is there a number on the vin or somewhere that signifies that it's a true WS6??

You check the RPO codes.

ok, one does say WS6. Is there another place to check besides the door? just to be sure?

example
no need to check anywhere else really... if it says it on the RPO codes then it is a ws6 (provided you know it is the original door with the car haha)
you seem like you are hesitant to believe it is a real ws6

yeah, kinda hesitant. the vin number doesn't really say it. Don't know if it's the original door or not. The door key doesn't work on the t-tops, so i'm wondering if it was converted to look like one. it has no badge on the back, but you can see that one was there at one point. The hood has no stickers on the underside....kinda odd. hence, me asking if there is another spot maybe under the hood or something.

there is a better chance that the t-tops were replaced than the doors being replaced. Does the key work on both doors and the hatch?
Im thinking it is a ws6, you have the RPO sticker, you can seewhere a ws6 badge was.
Do you have the stock exhaust on there? Ws6 cars in 98 had a single exhaust outlet only and regular TA's had dual exhaust with wider, more oval looking tips (similar to a grand prix gtp if youve seen them)

it has duals, but not original. looks like aftermarket. alot of people didn't like the single exhaust and changed them out. I think it is a true WS6, I just want to be 100% sure. suspension is pretty stiff and tires are 17", thicker in the back than front. If i find out it's not, i'm taking the bad boy back to the dealer.

Call or email Pontiac with the Vin and they'll tell you. I did just to be sure before shelling out 17K.

Take a look at that door decal shown above. SEE the VIN on it?? If it matches the VIN under the windshield, then that is the original door / decal for that car. The VIN by itself doesn't have anything unique in it that signifies a WS6 car, unless you run it through a dealer's computer to get the list of RPO codes (just like on the door decal).
This must be thread one billion and two.

if you would like you can send me the last eight of the vin# and i can look it up in gm's dealerworld thru the build codes to verify that it is a ws6. Just let me know and then I can email you the factory build sheet and any warrenty repair info the vehicle may have had.

The VIN is on that sticker so you can make sure it matches and the door wasn't changed. (Oops, someone already said that)
Saying that, there is always those that will dummy them for profit. It seems like a lot to do for adding a few extra buck to the sale. Modifying that sticker is illegal in most states. Or, at least that is what I think.
