Where is the best place to put a cutout?
I am going to be installing my exhaust on my car and I am getting a cutout but I need help on where to put it, and I am curious which would be better to do. I am doing 2.5" piping off of the headers and meeting it into a single 3" pipe all the way back to the muffler and out as 2.5" duals. Would it be better to put the exhaust cutout up front where it meets into the 3" piping, or should I put it right before the rear exle. For clearance issues, the rear axle area would work better, but will I lose much sound? I am also curious if either one would be better with air flow and performance? Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

towards the rear will reduce cabin noise and exhaust fumes/smell . . . i dont think there'll be much difference in performance, maybe slighty better flow up front do to less pipe to flow through , nothin you would notice i dont think. as for sound outside, i would say it would be close to the same.

If i could afford it, I would get 2 electric cut outs just after the headers. I'm sure it will resonate and smell sometimes, but i would keep it closed most of the time until I really want to be an asshole in my neighborhood. I would assume that the closer to the headers, more power will be gained. With 2 cutouts, no one can make fun of our Y pipe anymore.

i would but it as close to the headers that you can, and if your not gunna use it much who cares about the smell, just haul ass and you will not have to worry about the smell coming in the cabin

I've never found this to be a "down on power" problem. The cars that I currently have a pair of cutouts on generally pickup up about 2 tenths and 2-3 mph when I pull off the caps.
The picture in Suades post is exactly what I was talking about when it comes to a 4th gen single system,,,putting a pair of them in the Y-pipe is the way I would do it. Effectively acting like a dual system when opened and bypassing the factory single system setup.
They tend to be more visible this way and could cause ground clearance issues if your car is lowered. But it's the most effective way.

Where do you have yours at? Where the exhaust meets together?

should I cheap out and just buy one cut-out and install after the V in the Y or just wait and buy two, and istall each in the V?

It's up to you. Obviously if you go with the electric doors to add to your cutouts things can get more expensive in a hurry if you install a pair of them.
It's all a matter of what you really want. I think you'll find that most owners of 4th gens will have just one cutout somewhere in the I-pipe,,,,probably due to clearance issues and/or cost factors in as well. Hiding them may also be an issue since some states don't allow these to be installed.
Although I have seen quite a few though at the track with a dual cutout setup in the Y-pipe,,,,,great way to avoid the single system before it funnels down.
