Fill the oil filter: fact or myth?
should you fill the oil filter up with oil before you put it on?
I always do, but at this new garage i work in with 1 other mechanic he says "its a waste of time, just a myth and pointless.

I alway fill the oil filters before I install them. Been doing that for years. Whether it helps I can't say, but the fact that it's one less thing for the oil pump to fill, the oil gets around to other more important places on a dry start up a little faster I would think.
In any event,,,I also disable the ignition system after every oil change as well, crank the engine until I see movement in the oil pressure gauge, reenable the ignition and start the car.
It's been my experience that starting some engines (without this simple procedure) rattle like crazy until oil pressure resumes, sometimes as long as 5 seconds or more. No thanks.
Been a practice of mine for years.

Actually I would suggest it. I would rather have oil ready to go then wait for the filter to staturate and pass oil. That way it no differant then when it say sits over night.

I always fill them if i can. On some cars you cant though because the filter mounts in sideways.

Almost all the wear on your critical internals are at start up. FACT.
Filling the oil filter reduces the time it takes to presurizes the oiling system. FACT
The mechanic that told you this is a dumbass. FACT

I'll keep filling mine up with oil first. Why not? Only takes a few seconds.. I'm not in a NASCAR pit crew or anything so it wont be missed.. Definitely wont hurt anything, and more than like helps.

I got a Cummins and I never fill the oil filter... only the fuel filter.
My z28 I never fill the filter either.
Its a myth.
It might have less oil circulating for a moment but its not an overly long period of time. Plus everything inside the engine is already covered in a thin layer of oil.

Blue 1997 Trans Am(Sold)- Pewter 2001 Trans Am Vert
makes perfect sense, if its a side mount or angle mount filter the hell with it but for the ease that our filters are to put on why not as its been said before it truly cannot do any harm and it probably helps. I say take the 5 seconds and do it. At the very least you won't have to second guess your measuring when you re-fill your engine with oil because of dry areas.
