2002 Camaro SS (full exh/some intk) vs 94-98 Procharged Cobra
I was at the strip which was mostly muscle cars last sunday. There were camaros, trans ams, rice, and some others who didn't need to be there. Any how while I'm filling out my tech card I'm all checking out the other cars out. I spot this bad ass looking 94-98 black on black on black on black Cobra. It looked good. If I remember right it had a procharger and a cam. I didn't really look past that but I'm betting he had heads too. any way I see him beat most of the other mustangs there and I was thinking I'd maybe put him in his place.
We get up to the burnout boxes do our thing. I think he wanted to show me up by doing a bigger burnout, but I was thinking I'll let my time do the talking for me. Light goes green and I jump out a car for all of first gear. I hit 2nd very quickly and look over and here he comes... I stay in it giving it hell and next thing you know is we're neck and neck again... I'm thinking I'm still going to win and we hit 3rd and he pulls a little more. basically by the end of the 1/8 which is what we were running a highly modded cobra beat my stock LS1 by only 1 length. I was proud. My mods are FTRA, lid, kn filter, pp throttle body, lt headers, ory, catback, and I think I've got the driver mod...

Good race, but a 94-98 Cobra is a 2nd half track car. They begin to scream up top and in a 1/4 he would most likely had you by a decent margin.
But you were racing at a 1/8 and I give you props for hanging in there.

I've never heard of ANY mustang being a 2nd half or top end kind of car. I know for a fact bone stock wise they have a 3.55 rear end gear which usually helps them off the line better, but usually see the big difference between me and them in a race is between the last part of 1st and the beginning of 2nd. by then I'm usually gone REAL GOOD! I think that procharger helped him out just a little. I may be getting a cam here in a little bit and I'm betting that'd be enough to put him in his place.

by the way just to put things into perspective... I raced a 93 or older 5.0 and I put about 2 buses on him... I think it was stock and for his sake running on water. If that was me I wouldn't have brought that to the track.

Assuming you said '94-98 (and you weren't positive), i'd bet it was a 94 or 95 5-liter Cobra. They actually come stock with either 3.08 or 3.27 gears, and are pretty much low 15-second cars out of the box. They are also considerably heavier than the foxbody cars before them. Considering he was running a moderate amount of boost, plus cam and heads, the outcome doesn't suprise me. I doubt it was a blown heads and cams 4v Cobra as the outcome probably would have been worse for you.
Good Kill Though!

Was gonna also say it was most likely a pushrod cobra. I don't see a heads/cams sc 4v making anything less than 450rwhp. Also, if he's still using the stock shortblock heads/cams won't be too beneficial and would cost $3500+.
Whatever it was, you put up a good fight. Nothing wrong with that.

Yea I doubt it was 96-98 cobra, or it would of raped you. They came with the 4v 4.6 which loves boost...

Good fight you put up... Now he knows the difference between racing other Mustangs and racing an LS1.

It was fun... I also beat some 4bangers. There was a modded srt4 skittle and a modded integra there too. I have a buddy who has an auto ls1 t/a and he said from a roll the integra would've started walking me. I heard he sprays on top of his turbo. I layed into both of them any way
hahaha. I put a bus or 2 on the skittle and the integra caught up a lot by the end of the track. I ended up killing him by 2 or 3 cars. I'll try to wait till the fall and I'll go out and get sub 8.5sec times.

Black- 2003 Mustang Cobra
post up the timeslip so we can disect it.
FYI no cobra rear ever had 3.55 untill 03, they came with 3.08's or 3.27's.
and a mustang will "top end" just as well as any other car with a similar trap from 1/8th to 1/4. its not rocket science, the typical manual transmission car will trap 78-79% of their 1/4 MPH in the 1/8th as long as it's geared half decently. A 96-01 Cobra may be closer to the 76-77% range (more "topend" but more realistically, lacking on the lowend) than a typical car because of their shitty gearing. but with normal gearing it falls in line with every other car.
12.718 @ 117.47

maybe only 5spd gts have 3.55s... I thought cobras had the same... doesn't really matter though.
