I don't know either:
1 - How many purple T/A's have you seen? (me = 0)
and
2 - Only way to tell is if you got the paint code, and GM could verify that 'purple' was the original color (they would have to stamp it on the whatchamacallit sticker)

2000 Grand Prix GTP- 2000 Trans Am WS6 M6
Yes...in '98 12 "Bright Purple Metalic" (BPM) Trans Am WS6s made it out of the factory...10 coupes and 2 verts. GM stopped using the color because of production issues with the paint. The color was replaced with the Navy Blue Metallic (NBM) color.
I'd verify if that is the original paint or not, but there's a possibility it's legit.

This is straight from Wikipedia. Don't take it as 100% accurate since it's from Wiki.
In 1998, the Firebird received a "face lift" dominated by a new front fascia (now with four pop-up headlights) as well as other modifications, the most significant of which was the introduction of the latest Corvette small block V8 engine, the LS1. Initially, the color "Bright Purple Metallic" had been available, however it was discontinued due to production issues with the paint. The color was replaced with "Navy Blue Metallic," but not before a total of 12 Trans Am models with the WS6 Ram Air package (10 coupés and 2 convertibles) made it out of the factory dressed in "Bright Purple Metallic."[1] For 1998-2002 Pontiac utilized the same heavy duty brakes, steering ratios, fuel pumps and shocks (non-WS6) on both V6 and V8 models.

i would never pay $12k for a car with 100k+ miles just because of the "rare" color!!! it books for $8.5k in excellent condition and i'd even think twice about that price.....

Collector Yellow- 2002 Pontiac Trans Am CE
There's a special place in my heart for purple.....Oh man, what I wouldn't give to paint my Impala Cosmos Purple Metallic. That will be the day I jerk it to an auto for the first time.

I never liked the purple myself.
If I were a collector, the rare 4th gen birds I'd be after would be the Orange ones, and that light Blue '99 Trans Am.

Arctic White- 2001 Firebird Formula
sure it does.....this isnt the first time a color was discontinued either. back in 93 only 196 cars were painted yellow before being discontinued...
heres some more examples:
1. the 35 anniversary cars are yellow with the black markings.
2. the 1999 30th anniversary t/a's are only white and blue.
3. the 1997 30th anniversary camaros are only white and orange.
i can go on and on and on...lol
