I noticed that the exterior color "red" for 98-02 show the same paint code "81" although 98-99 was Bright Red and 00-02 was Bright Rally Red.
Why is that?

What a bummer. My 99 camaro is pewter right now. Took off my door panel and found out it use to be gold. According to the link only 5 were painted gold for that year. To bad who ever painted it did not do there research

Might just be the door was replaced. I'd dig some more. Because to do a color change on these 4th gens is very extensive. You would have to paint the entire engine compartment, the floor pans underneath the car, you get the idea. Not many painters go through the trouble to pull the entire drivetrain to do it right.
I'd bet if the car was originally gold, you would have noticed it while under the car or with the hood up. That's why I say probably the door was switched.
