If you take the whole fron end apart you should be able to do everything with the motor still in the car, on howtols1.com they go through every step and have great pictures if you cant read. I have help friends do cam swaps in there z28s i would say the hardest part with doin it with the engine still in the car is the valve springs.

You don't need to remove the engine in any way to do a cam swap. Just take your time and make sure you have all the right parts. If you get frustrated step back and take a breath. And for god sake don't drop the pick up tube bolt into the oil pan! It sucks getting it out.

yeah, just pull the radiator and ac condensor but the condensor just pivots up out of the way. I hope you're doing all the supporting stuff too like timing chain, valve springs, and oil pump right?
Be careful pulling your old cam out and putting the new one in. Be gentle so you don't mess up a cam bearing. Use the longer bolts out of the water pump and thread those into the end of the cam for leverage. All of that is in the write up.

Make it easy on yourself and just replace everything that is now accessible with upgraded parts if it is something you might want to do later. Like get a double roller timing chain and ported oil pump. Get new gaskets. They aren't always needed but it is cheap piece of mind. Don't forget a new pick up tube O-ring.

A racheting wrench makes the pickup tube bolt a tad bit easier. I had one of those cheap AZ extendable magnets right there just in case but its still going to be a pain in the tail. To me that was the most tedious part of the whole build. So much time for just one little part and definately go ahead and get a new oring.

Putting the rag in the front of oil pan is very good insurance against having that bolt roll back on you. Just don't make the mistake of leaving it there. When I did mine I was working on it late at night after I got home from work. I got the front put back on and all buttoned up and that was my stopping point so I went to bed. I'm laying there in bed trying to fall asleep and it hit me. I forgot to take the rag out. I got back out of bed and went back to the garage and tore the front down again to get the rag out. Almost a huge mistake. It gets around the crank and gets shredded to bits. I snapped a pic of it. Almost screwed the pooch.
