We use it in nascar so that the tires don't expand/grow as fast as normal air. Normal air molecules expand faster under heat. Nitrogen resists heat but doesn't stop the expansion, just slows it down.
Considering it takes a couple laps to generate enough heat in a tire to make it start expanding, street driving and/or drag racing won't receive any benefit from nitrogen. Nothing wrong with using it, but it's not cheap.

as Intimid8r said, I always thought the purpose of nitrogen was due to the fact that when the tires got hot and expand, it doesn't have as big of an effect on the tire psi............

The heat does increase the psi. That's why you see in nascar (if you follow it.....) the crews have such low pressure in the tires at the short tracks that it looks like the tire is almost flat. That's because the tire will generate alot of heat once they get to racing and the pressure will build to what the crew chief wants to have. They use the stiffness of the tire to help stiffen or soften the overall spring rate of each corner of the car.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Nitrogen is free with all new tire purchases and Belle Tire will top tires off free for the life of the tires.

as long as you have the air in your tires changed every 3,000 miles you really shouldnt need nitrogen. duh! hahahahahahahaha
