running auto tranny fluid thru motor today, advice

okay so i narrowed my tick/knock down to the bottom of the passenger side cylinder head. most suggest it could be a sticky lifter, i've pulled the valve covers and checked everything else i could. so im gonna run automatic tranny fluid thru the engine for 5-10 minutes like another member on the forum suggested (i guess its suppose to be an old school trick?) anyone have any experience doing this or any advice for me as far as what to do or what not to do. i dont wanna my engine.

you put a vac line in the bottle of trans flused and keed the car at about 2000 to 2400 rpm or it will die. do it out side coz its going to smoke like crazy. the detergints in the flued are sead to clean the moter. its the chep way to do it coz thay do make kits just for this now but you will pay close to $100 for it camared to just $2

This trick works great for storing a car over the winter and to lube up the upper end of the motor, but I think he is going to pour it in the motor in place of oil, not through a vacuum line.

i dont know if i read it on this forum or ls1tech but a bunch of people(myself included) are having a tick/knock that isnt rockers, springs or pushrods. one of the guys said he talked to bunch of mechanics that are familiar with ls1's and they said that the lifters sticking are a common problem with these engines. he went on to explain that the tech. said one thing to try before tearing into the engine is to drain all the engine oil and fill the engine with 5 quarts auto tranny fluid and run the engine for 5-10 minutes, then drain the fluid, change the filter and see if it worked. he was saying its an old trick they use to free up the lifters

Never heard of this. Kinda sounds like port n polishing your motor with sandblasting sand. PM sarge, he seems to be the local guru. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I would use a half quart of marvel mystery oil or justice brothers tune up in a can before I would use trans fluid. From what I know, trans fluid in the motor doesnt really work very well, besides, its really thin and doesnt have the lubricating properties needed for the engine, even if you run it 5-10 minutes with only trans fluid it may even wreck your motor. Just my two cents.

dude just seafoam your engine, i wouldnt put trans fluid in my engine , even if its a proven trick....sounds like a bad idea to me

What I heard was that you switch out a quart of Tranny Fluid for Oil when you do your oil change and just run it normally for 3k-5k miles...the Tranny Fluid acts like a detergent and cleans out the stuck on oil sludge.

I try and do it every other oil change...never caused any problems.

I used to put a bottle of tranny (possibly brake) fluid in my truck gas tank every few months... never had any issues with it...

Ever pour water down the carb to blow out the carbon deposits? Another Old school trick.

ok so i tried it, i put a little over 4 quarts atf in the crankcase, then filled the rest up with regular oil, i was too chicken to run straight atf. i ran the car for about 10 minutes(the tick/knock being there the whole time) then drained the fluid, changed the oil filter and put in some PP 10-30. the sound remains the same. tick, tick, tick all f'ing day!!!!! you can really hear it good when you kneel down and listen in between the front tire and front fender or in between the door and front tire. i dont have a video camera but im gonna try to get one so i can post it up and get some ideas.

which do you think would work better for freeing up the lifter, MMO or ATF?
