American bulldogs are actually the "original bulldog". Their usefullness ran out in the 1800s and the breed almost died, so it was crossed with pugs to make a showdog (english, french bulldog) and terriers to produce the Pit bull terrier for fighting. In the 1940s an effort to revive the "original bulldog" was made and now they are known as American Bulldogs. I had one for a while, everyone will think it is a massive pitbull. Very energetic, strong dogs. They might have a problem with their active nature and size with accidentally hurting a small child.

Yes good dogs with alot of energy. You just have to keep on them while training since they are pretty slow to learn, after that they are golden.

And in Australia, there are a group of people who are endeavouring to breed a "better" bulldog that has less health issues.

IMO not great around children. They dont realize their own strength. My buddy has one and it is unbelievably strong and very high strung. He ia about 3 yrs old now.

my friend had an American bulldog. It was a good dog, but really big. It will scratch up people playing around and they are incredibly strong. His died from having an anxiety attack when riding in the car. I think the car thing is a breed issue. May want to check that out.

I don't know personally, but my gf is a dog trainer and she says they're great. I want a big dog once I get settled in a house and they're on her recommended list. Energetic and strong, big but not as big as a Mastiff but a little drier in the mouth. Slower to learn but very eager to please and very, very loyal.

Like any dog, train it well with patience and consistency, and it'll be a good dog.
