Self-Employed
So since we had the "what do you do thread," I wanted to see if anyone is self-employed, owns a business, invests, etc. What do you do? Reason I'm asking is looking to do this myself. I have some ideas but want to hear some more.

I own 1/2 of a auto repair shop in Florida. Worked as a mechanic for 15 years, Got tired of the BS of the dealership. My home and toys were paid off, and I knew I could get a job if I had to. So I started the shop with a co-worker and $12,000.00 , almost 5 years ago. we now have 2 guys working for us. I would have made more money if I had stayed. It sucks PAYING to learn, I was going on 10 years as a Master Chrysler/ASE tech. Just got tired of working for the man.
Even so Its MUCH more fun to be the man..

Took a job as a Mod on a LS1 web forum. Racking up the billable hours....no paycheck as of yet.

Originally was a stock broker with multiple licenses. Worked for 3 large firms in NY and retired at 28 years old. Got bored and at 29 went back to work but don't want to say what I am doing now. I work for the fun of it more then for the money.

My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
went to college for 4 years and achieved a b.s. in communication + multimedia design. Started my career working for an ad. agency doing web and print design and now I have started my own agency; couldn't stand working by someone elses' rules [dress code, hours, etc.]

Here's what I would have done different. I wouldn't have wasted my time in college getting a degree in something I hated. (aerospace engineering)
My present career path is much more enjoyable, although I have burned too many brain cells over the last 15 years or so.
Here's the thing, No matter what you do, do something that makes you happy.
Oh, and try your hardest to avoid working for the man.
It blows sacrificing your life to build up a company that YOU will never reap the rewards from.

I own 19 dump trucks, and some other heavy industrial road construction equipment. I have been doing it for 2 years now, and thinking of buying some idustrial property soon. I just sighned a contract for 10 years will see how it does. I am union, to protect my men from our down-falls in our economy, and we all get along fine. I think I am a pretty easy going boss.
I work hard to play hard one day like Sarge.. I have a degree, but I can wipe my ass with it. If I had it my way I would of still been in The Army.

I sold it 8 years ago but I started a sound company and expanded to sound and lighting doing regional (mostly) acts for 20+ years. Got out of it when it quit being fun anymore. That is a hellishly competitive business. I made more money then but I have more stomach lining now. Health insurance for small companies is a bitch too.
