Tranny goin south, or me over-reacting?
I just picked up an '02 WS6 A4, 55K miles, bone stock, and I have a question about the firmness of the shifts and factory shift points. I've owned a few other f-body cars and all of them seemed to have a pretty firm 1-2 shift from the factory, this car is very smooth, almost not even noticeable. And I've also noticed that it's holding it's rev's longer than other cars I've owned, it doesnt shift out until ~6000-6100rpm. Just wondering if this is a sign of the tranny beginning to go, or am I worrying too much. My concern is that I have 3 months remaining on a factory warranty, and if it's getting ready to go, I'd like to see it go soon, so I wont have to eat the cost of a rebuild. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Joe.

Mine is "half way out" 3rd. gear and OD. In my '02 Firehawk. The guy at "Acadiana Transmissions", in Lafayette, La, said, "the computer may be throwing signs of tranny failure". He said, "couldn't properly diagnose without them going-in and investigating it". Gonna bring my Hawk next week.Heard 'horror-stories' of the 4L60E.

Kinda sounds like it may be going south.. Back with my was an auto, i went through a few 4L60E's.. The 1-2 shift should be pretty firm.. Since you still have a warranty go in a pitch a fit and get a new one..

What they shift at can change depending on what you tune it to do. The original poster of this thread IMHO should check with the previous owner to see if the trans was set up that way intentionally. If you can't speak to him, find a local tuner and get them to check it out for you. If it has been tuned that way intentionally you wouldn't want to have a dealer put a stock tune back in and lose a $300-$600 custom tune. If somebody drove my car they would think something is definitely wrong since I have my hot shift points set at 6,500 rpm!
(And I wouldn't want anybody wasting my 53 dyno runs to get this tune and put in a 'stock' tune although in reality since I have it backed up I could put it back in)Michael
