Science Geeks - 2 yrs later Martian Rover

2 yrs later see how the Mars rover is holding up. On the pics you can slide for a comparison.

    Sadly now demodded :(

Much like Voyager, it's held up remarkably well.

Very cool. Took me a minute to figure out that you can slide back and forth between the pics.

Looking back now I think it's a super smart thing that NASA lunched this explorer prior to any man mission to Mars. I truly think there needs to be several more at various locations that way they have a complete picture of the planet prior to putting "volunteers" at risk.

Also so now that we can do this with Mars why not a couple of other planets?

I agree....I'd love to see these things all over. The one I'd most like to see is on Titan. Unfortunately I'll probably be dead and gone before any of that happens. The talk has been a manned mission to mars by 2020 but I don't see that happening. Right now that's a one way ticket for the most part and the chance of death is almost guaranteed.

Somebody would volunteer...I would think quite a few astronauts would love to be the first ones to go to Mars even if it is a one way ticket.

the one and only thing I see that I would change is the grooves on the metal wheels they made...they seem pretty shallow to me considering that this thing was going to be driving over a ton of sand...

Read yesterday that NASA's Engineer's solution for the damage tread is, wait for it......

why would you not have rubber treads on there to cushion the blows to the rocks. Thing probably weighs a ton so aluminum wheels are only going to last so long on rock.

I was thinking the same thing...I'm sure Michelin or Goodyear would have loved to create something for this thing and get some advertising out of it.
