Packing oil pump with Vaseline???

LS buds,

I have been told to pack oil pump with Vaseline along with cylinder walls to lubricate for initial startup I have been told its an old skool trick! I would greatly appreciate your advice i am trying to get away from buying the pressurized oil primer! I have seen an initial startup done like this and motor still running strong!

No.....no.....no

If not assemble - you can damp a clean rag and wipe the walls with a light coat of oil, your lifters should have been soaked over night for oil to fill them.

If its already assemble then -
You can prime the system by removing the wire harness to the fuel injectors and turn over a few short cranks. The low oil light will go off when it detects oil.

It depends on how much time it has sat without running.

One more to add, different oil products do different things to gaskets & rubber, some lubercate others destroy them.

Wow so many mixed thoughts i will be storing the engine for a a while until tranny is built and project car is bought so i want the safest more securest way possible

I bought royal purple max tuff assembly lube read really good reviews on it

Assembly lube is simply for the first few seconds to ensure no metal-to-metal contact while the oil fills the galleys and pressure builds. On old school SBC, you could prime the oil pump through the distributor hole and get things flowing without turning the key. No such luck on our cars. I wouldn't recommend packing the engine full of Vaseline.

I was thinking of creating my own pressurized tank in order to prime her because I don't know how long the engine will sit before I actually get her started! Although I shall drenched her in assembly lube and oil I don't want to risk breaking something in initial startup

OP, I just rebuilt my wife's Jeep that had been sitting for just over a yr. It took me about a month to take from bare block to fully put back together and running because I was doing only on weekends and a few couple of hrs each night during the last week.


I have to ask - what is wrong with it or what why are you storing it?

Answer this might able us to give you some better input.

Unless the housing above the oil filter is tapped for a cooler, your only access to the oil galley is going to be the OPSU on the back of the block. That's the one thing that I really don't like about the engine design on our cars - no way to easily plumb in a pressure gauge to the oil circuit if you suspect an issue.

I've had my LQ4 short block sitting for almost a yr now in storage. I plan on breaking it down and hot tank it anyways, so leaving it in storage was not an issue for me. In your case I would not work on it till I had gotten more parts & car in hand.

I once had a friend that had a Stingray Corvette. He took so much shit over an 18 month period because it was rough looking, rough being an understatement. What nobody knew was that he had been storing parts and such at his dad's house. Once he acquired everything he needed, he took 30 days leave, went home and spent all of it in his dad's shop. Came back with a show car quality build. No one could believe it was the same car.

My point is plan it out and make smart purchases and do it right you'll be able to finish it before you know it.

Lol well its a little late for that engine is completely apart and plan on pressure washing the lock this weekend and greasing it all up until next month that i will have the missing parts to build up the short block again... Then all i would need is to get the heads ported and bolted on
