    Derek....ever seen this?

I'm butchering my buddies deer for him. Came across these bruises, busted blood vessels, or whatever they are. They're in every single muscle. This is that center roast out of the back ham but they were in everything from the back straps to the forearm muscles. Not sure I've ever ran across this before. He said the deer was healthy looking. It did have a spot on it's back where it'd been injured at some point but it wasn't infected or anything....just a little fat deposit where the wound was. It was a head shot so no damage from it flopping around and where these things were located there's no way it was from an outside source. Not sure what the symptoms of bovine leukemia are....plan on doing some reading tonight.

I'd consider taking it to the game commision and seeing what they say about it. They may tell you to get rid of it, and give him another tag.

Or they could quarantine you all and kill it with fire.

I emailed him this picture so he can forward it to the DNR here. I have a feeling it's no big deal though....the deer looked healthy and the meat smelled fine. I asked him what the internals looked like when he field dressed it and he said everything looked great. I'm just curious more than anything because I've butchered maybe 50 deer and have never ran into this or haven't noticed it if I have. It's like he had some blood thing going on or something where vessels were bursting or something. Maybe high blood pressure?

figured it out....I'll post a link later. I gotta get going and pick Zach up. Basically it has to do with the way the deer died and the time it took him to actually die. My buddy said that even though it was a head shot he was flopping around even 15 minutes later.

A few years ago a buddy of mine shot a deer from bullets he reloaded that were a pretty hot load ( I think it was well over 4000 fps) which shocked the hell out of the deer. What did your buddy shoot it with.

If it were smaller spots I'd say stressed. stressed. Caused by a prolonged death.

My meat cutter says its too big and too much for stress. Said definitely don't eat it.
He's never seen it like that before. He does about 100 a year.

that was probably the biggest spots of it....right in that roast. Most of the other spots were the size of a pencil lead or a little bigger. I'm not eating shit. I even made sure my meat and his meat stayed completely separate. I'll let him decide on what to do. He said after he shot it that it danced around a lot longer than you would think a head shot should. He said like 15 minutes after he shot it he went to climb out of his stand and it started kicking around again. So much that he loaded the muzzle loader again in case it tried to get up so there was definitely some stress there and a longer than usual death. I can only imagine he must've not tore into the part of the brain that controls heart beat and respiratory stuff or something. When I say in one ear and out the other that's being literal. There was not a ton of head trauma there really for that shot. You do that shot with a slug and it'd tear out the entire top of the head.

Shot placement is very important in deer hunting and shooting a deer in the head is not ethical. IMO

it wasn't intentional..... Shot placement and "ethics" are subjective anyhow.....you're killing a deer, it doesn't care where you're shooting it at. It'd rather not be shot at all.
