I use 93 octane and Mobil 5000.

There are better oils out there for sure. Amsoil is one of the best I think.

thanks guys, im just wondering i know its prolly a dumb question but im 17 an going to get my Camaro today an just want to know some stuff. i have been workin on cars since i was 10 with my dad restoring a NOVA but its always good to have other input thanks

I've always run 93 in my TA even before the tune and whatever synthetic oil is on sale mobil , castrol ect... and have no issues with mine after almost 12 yrs. Just no Royal purple, over priced crap.

I haven't done any research myself, but a mechanic I go to has told me numerous times that he's had to rebuild more engines that have had PENNZOIL in them than any other oil. PENNZOIL may not be as bad as he says, but then it again it just might be.. I'm not gonna chance it tho.

The best gas? Run either 93 or Sunoco 94. You have a high tech engine...don't put some crap 86 octane gasoline in it. I will say that I'm not sure if any higher octane above the 94 will produce results. I've heard the computer either will or will not respond, but I couldn't say.

As far as oil goes...Amsoil is unparalleled. They were the first in synthetics in 1978...and offering 25,000 mile or one-year drain intervals since. Its formulated to go well beyond the 3/5,000 mile drain interval. Most oils are full of VI (viscosity index improvers) and cheap, evaporating addatives. The Amsoil 5/30 pours at 76 degrees below zero, and has a normal operating temperature about 200 degrees higher than crude. Instead of the long hydrocarbon chains of crude, synthetics are more like small "liquid ball bearings" like Penzoil advertizes. Less friction and the synthetics will actually fill into the micropores of the metal resulting in less wear.

Get the Amsoil oil filter (6-8 micron filtration) along with the air filter. The life-time air filter is an oil-wetted foam (similar to K&N) and lets the car breathe better for less cost. Usually 10-15HP on an LS motor and better filtration than a paper air filter. I'm a former dealer, and only former because I don't have the time to set up accounts anymore now that I work for GM. I can't recommend this product enough.

Do NOT run crude oil on any engine after it has been "broken-in" unless its worn out and burning oil. At that point, any synthetic will just clean it out and probably eat away at the "artificial seals" that are plugged up with deposits. Crude is great for seating and swelling seals, but that's it. Crude engine oil basically the last sludge of the refinement process. They boil off everything good, and then sell you a 2 or 3 dollar quart of sludge to put into your 5 thousand dollar engine. Engine oil is about 90 percent base stock and 10 percent additives. Depending on where it was pumped, you will always have different levels of parrafin (wax), sulfur, etc. This is what is responsible for engine deposits. With any synthetic, you will have "free" carbon, but near zero deposits formed from the oil itself.

I wouldn't even put it in the same playing field as a K&N...way better.

Amsoil has not sold oil-wetted foam air filters for some time now. They switched to dry cell Donaldson Ultra-Web Nanofiber media in their line of air and oil filters... a media that is MUCH better than foam.
