    Is changing oil a joke.

My friend's Mercedes recs 13500 miles, my neighbors G35 11050 miles i think he said, and my moms cadillac cts with what is probably an impala engine recs 10000 miles. How can higher end cars rec twice as many miles when the cars have the same engine? Just makes me think this mobil 1 synthetic that I'm changing every 3500 miles is a bit overkill.

OK the oil companies say the oil will hold the viscosity that long, but let me ask you this. How long do you want the carbon and metal in your engine? that is what changes your oil black. The way I see it is if you change your oil more than 15k 10k or even 6 k you will be giving your engine a longer life. Plus that carbon builds up on your valves and such.screw all that noise I use synthetic in the wifes car and still change it at 3 k. the oil comes out fairly clean and the engine inside(as far as I can see) is clean.

Oh yea the oil filter is supposed to get the metal and carbon out but it cannot get it all. if it did the oil wouldn't come out darker.

The best one is when my lazy ass goes to oil places to change the oil on my DD toyota. Dealer recommend it to be changed every 5,000 miles. So the asswipe manager at the jiffy lube claims that they do that on purpose because it will destroy my engine quicker and therefore, I have to go to a dealer to change the engine when it blows

i do every 5k miles. every time the odometer reads a 5 or a 0 in the thousand mile place i change. you can still see through the stream of oil coming out. its darker, but its still good. i wouldnt be afraid to take my oil to 8k if i was doing a lot of highway and was a little easier on it.

Lots of guys run oil analysis to prove how little wear is going on inside their engines, and exactly how much of what is floating around in the oil. At that point it's science proving just how far you can go, not heresay and bullshit and manufacturer's claims.

    This.

If you really want to know exactly how long to go between changes get a couple UOA's done. There are links to dyson and blackstone in THIS thread.
