    Upgrade to Vista?

So when I bought my laptop 2 years ago I said it was "vista capable" since vista was on the verge of coming out. It's a Toshiba with XP, anyways I may have deleted a few on accident and internet explorer, and a few other windows programs don't work. It's annoying, and I don't have a recovery cd to reformat it as you had to create it and that program is also messed up...So is Vista worth the upgrade and how do I get it??? Thanks

I wouldn't call that an 'upgrade.'

vista capable means just that....capable not that it will run smooth....I wouldn't even attempt it seriously. Stick with XP

I was skeptical about running Vista. I am a network administrator, and I had been using it on a test machine since the beta days. It was ok, but I had mixed results. I decided to upgrade my new computer that I built a few months ago to Vista, and I have had no problems. I even upgraded my Dell D610 laptop to Vista, and it runs fine also. If you have the hardware to run it, it will be fine. SP1 solved a lot of problems from the original release.

Some mixed views on whether to "upgrade" or not. This is my home laptop. My system specs are...

    Toshiba Satellite
    Genuine Intel(R) CPU
    T1350 @1.86GHz
    1.86GHz. 0.99 GB of RAM

Like I said now in the first post my dumb self accidentally deleted some things and can't use IE and other windows programs, along with the program where I was suppose to "make" my own recovery CD....and this seems like the only option to start a new slate. I've tried re-downloading IE several times with no prevail.

4G of ram, a decent video adapter, and fast hard drive and I would opt for Vista. Unfortunately your laptop does not meet those specs. Although Vista may "run", by the time you add anti-virus and other utilities in the background, and want a word processor, email, and a browser open concurrently, you will be unhappy with the performance.

Not that Vista can't be "de-tuned" in terms of bells and whistles, and configured to provide reasonable performance, but since you are asking this question it would be a real hassle for you to do it.

I do this stuff for a living and while I initially was satisfied with my five year old P4 with 1.5G of ram, Vista, and Office 2007, I now have 4G of ram, 1T of fast hard drive, and a newer graphics adapter with 512k on it. My machine runs Vista just fine despite its age and lack of gaming capacity as I basically use it for blogging, office programs, accounting, and a little surfing. For my use it is reasonably fast and I can utilize enough of the eye candy to have some fun. Your laptop is nowhere near even my very outdated performance capabilities.

Stay with XP. If you can find a full version buy it before it is all gone and do a clean reload.

    Vista loves memory.

Actually, my 2nd PC's memory died. So I moved my 4 gigs to it. And upgraded my main PC to 8

4GB is optimal for Vista. 8GB would benefit extreme power users. I have 4GB in mine and it runs just fine, and I do a lot of gaming on it. Any of the NT based operating systems will use as much memory as is possible. Here are my specs:

    Home Computer:

Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4 Ghz
    Asus P5N-E-SLI MB
    4GB Crucial Ballistix Memory
    (2) WD 320 GB Caviar SATA Drives
    (2) Lite-On SATA DVD-RW Drives
Visiontek Radeon HD 4850 Video Card
    Antec 750W PS
    Antec Nine Hundred case
    Vista Ultimate

    Laptop:

    Dell Latitude D610
    Intel Pentium M 2.0 Ghz
    2GB RAM
    Vista Ultimate

The laptop runs Vista just fine. I see very little, if any, difference from when I upgraded it from XP PRO.
