New Jersey Inspection Regulations for Exhaust!?

Hey guys im new to this site, and I already used the "search" button to try and find some information about my question. But, has anyone from New Jersey had any problems getting inspected with SLP Loudmouth 1 exhaust? Are they too loud for our New Jerseyan ears?

I have a buddy from Jersey, he as well has the Loudmouth 1 system, he hasnt had any issues over the years getting it inspected.

I live in New Jersey and have been through this with the State dmv inspections last year..
I have cam, heads, QTP headers, gutted cats and a Loud Mouth 1 Non modular version which is the original version with the resonator built into the I-pipe meaning you can't swap them out..

Techincally I am over the regulation decibel limit..
My car also isnt allowed to race at Englishtown either because I fail their decibel limits too..
But I faught and argued my way through inspection and ended up winning resulting them being forced to pass my exhaust for inspections


But according to New Jersey law and regualtions on Motor Vehicle exhaust..

N.J. Stat. @ 39:3-70 (2002)

@ 39:3-70. [Mufflers]

Every motor vehicle having a combustion motor shall at all times be equipped
with a [muffler] in good working order and in constant operation to prevent
[excessive or unusual noise and] annoying smoke, AND NO PERSON SHALL MODIFY THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OF A MOTOR VEHICLE IN A MANNER SO THAT THE EXHAUST SYSTEM EMITS IN EXCESS OF NINETY-FIVE DECIBELS AS MEASURED BY THE SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS (SAE) STANDARD J1169 (May 1998). IT SHALL NOT BE A VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION UNLESS PROVEN BY PROPER AUTHORITIES THAT THE EXHAUST SYTEM MODIFICATION RESULTS IN NOISE AMPLIFICATION IN EXCESS OF NINETY-FIVE DECIBELS UNDER THE PRESCRIBED SAE TEST STANDARD.

A COURT MAY DISMISS ANY ACTION FOR WHICH A PERSON IS PROSECUTED FOR OPERATING A VEHICLE IN VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION IF IT IS FOUND THAT THE DEFENDANT HAD REASONABLE GROUNDS TO BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT OPERATED IN VIOLATION OF THIS SUBSECTION.

[and] n No person shall use a [muffler] cut-out, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.


And the SAE test procedure for this is

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) with an established noise limit of 95-decibels (SAE J1169). Under the SAE standard, a sound meter is placed 20 inches from the exhaust outlet at a 45-degree angle and the engine is revved to three quarters of maximum rated horsepower. The highest decibel reading is then recorded...


So in New Jersey they can not fail your exhaust unless they can prove that your exhaust is over the 95 decibel limit..
So if you have Cats or what looks like cats with no exhaust leaks ect..
They can not fail you..
And you will find out like I did that the inspection stations arent even equipped with decibel meters..
They just use their ears for their judgement and depending on if you rub them the wrong way or if they are having a bad day they can fail you..

So be prepared to put your foot down and fight which most likely will be with the inspection station manager which is who you should request to talk to if you have a problem...

They can fail you for sound and they can fail you for not passing emission's if they decide to test your car on the dyno because it doesn't smell right. Then, if you're caught with no cats or gutted cats, you could be in for some trouble or fines. The original LM1 is too loud anyway and you will most likely get pulled over by cops. Then they might check to see if the rest of the exhaust is legal. You might want to get a LM2 resonator to quiet it down a little. It can only help you in the future.

NJ2002.Do you have 02 sims or 02 sensors deleted to pass emmisions.My cats been throwing codes since I had 80,000 miles on it .I now have 206,000and I need to get an inspection.Im still knocking down good mpg and car is still performing well and I not looking to changing them yet .After I pass Im thinking about going with long tube headers and a new exhaust .My o2 sims went bad and cant find anyone who sells them.So I went to a shop and had the rear 02 deleted.Will this get me past inspection when the plug into my car.

im pretty sure it will. Another opinion might help. Another question though.. Has anyone got the "sniffer" put in their exhaust pipes upon inspection to check for unfiltered exhaust?

last time i went it was to a private station. he told me they dont use a sniffer on newer cars like ours. all they do is hook up a scanner and from that they can tell if things have been changed.

yeah thats what my mechanic said too.. since we have OBDII.. i think it was like 1995 and older..

If I fail inspection at one NJ facility, do I have to go back to the same facility or can I go to a different one in NJ. Thanks

if you got a CEL on dont even bother you will fail. find a shop you can bribe .did i say that ?

I dont have a cel on. I have a feeling that i just didn't get the right guy when I went. b/c my car has passed insepction 3x's before this current one. my father redcently took it to an inspection station i normally don't go to. I was just wondering if i could take it to a different one even though it failed at the one my father brought it to.

I'm kind of worried about getting an inspection sticker as well...I know my grandpaws truck just failed twice because of the OBX headers and Magnaflow exhaust. First time the SES light had been reset and it hadn't been 150 miles since (it came on because the o2 sensors), and then they failed it for no reason at all. They said there was no codes but it said something wasn't right. I don't see how they could have failed it...Its a 04 Sierra 6.0L and they even hooked it up to the sniffer...

if you fail at one, you can go to a different one every day. haha i had a truck that would fail the sniffer and took it like evry dmv around. and the new station will only check what you failed for last time.

oh spaz, we dont have the sniffer for our cars. its cars 96 and older. i guess they could if obd passes, but they can tell somethings up.

My Camaro passed NJ state inspection .Having the o2 sensors deleted worked.Just wanted to let others know incase they had the same problem I had. 207,000+ and still going
