What does porting the heads mean/do?

porting the heads increases the size of the runners i believe, i may be wrong as im not 100% sure so dont take my word on this. polishing them reduces the friction in the runners. porting and polishing increases the total ammount of air allowd into the engine while reducing friction on the air allwing it to move air in quicker. but like i said im not 100% sure on this.
