It's economics... It's not their fault their product is in such high demand

sure its in high demand, but thats too high, thats just wrong, they should be making 1 billion / quarter profit max, imagine what gas prices would be if they cut their profits......

Why should they "cut their profits"?
They are not in business to do us favors, their duty is to increase the wealth of shareholders. Luckily for them they provide a product that people are willing to pay for. Luckily for us they provide a product that is still cheaper than the alternatives.

My problem isn't them making money, it's the fact that they have no regulations on how much they can charge for it. In this time of economic uncertainty, it is quite possible that eventually people will start cutting back on things they don't need anymore like that summer vacation because it's too expensive.
It's a trickle down effect, they just happen to be at the very end of the effect. I hope eventually they get their just dues and we find a way to either regulate their asses or finally allow the technology that is out there to get like 100 mpg while still maintaining a good amount of HP. Then see just how much people need to fill up at their demon stations.
I'd rather buy my gas from BORIS the Russian or Habib the indian at the no name stations rather then pump more $$ into the big 3

Not trying to be argumentative, just pointing out that I am not regulated (presumably neither are you) on how much I can charge for the products and services I sell to make a living.
Regulations like the one you mention (price caps) have been tried before in this country and ultimately hurt the customer. For example, would you rather pay $3.00/gallon and be able to buy as much as you wanted or pay $1.50/gallon to wait in hour long lines only to find a shortage that causes you to be unable to buy enough fuel to get to and from work.
If we just let the market work without interference we will be better off as a whole.

No I'm not regulated, but there is plenty of competition in what I do so I have to be very cautious not to try to rape my clients. I also don't change my prices DAILY like gas stations do. You want to tell me they got new gas since 9 pm last night that cost them 9 cents more, I don't think so.
There has to be away to get the gas companies to realize they are destroying this country.

But the price they charge has nothing to do with their costs. I find that misunderstanding a lot around here. Prices are set by how much a customer is willing to pay not by how much it costs the supplier. If prices were set by costs then no product could ever be sold at a loss, which happens all of the time.
As for the competition: a large organized competing product does not exist because it would be too expensive to compete with the price of gasoline. People are motivated by greed (rightfully so I think) and if someone could get rich competing with gasoline someone would have. This just proves that gas continues to be the cheapest alternative, even at $4.00/gallon. When gas becomes so expensive that alternatives are commercially viable they will exist to take market share, thus the beauty of a free market.
I disagree that gas companies are destroying this country.

well I know it's never going to change I'm just sick of hearing how much they are making and the rest of the country is falling apart. They even said they were going to spend some astronomical amount in research and development on new sources or technology or some crap like that, but do you really think they will release the information if they find a better CHEAPER way to do things. I don't again it all works in their favor.
I know it's a mute point, but every time I see gas prices going up and then 3 months later another article about a record breaking quarter yet all you hear is financial recession on the news I get all burnt up about it.

because the price of gas shot up from 1.99 to $3 in a month so they are just now leveling off to the actual price of where it should be. I don't think we are using any more or less gas then ever before, if anything probably LESS because of all the green cars on the road and the big push to save energy with insulation, new windows, more efficient appliances, etc...

I thought the price of gas had to do with the value of the dollar?
Somebody was saying that as the value of the dollar changes it changes the prices since gas is a worldwide market, not just ours?
Could be BS, but it made sense to me.
Not that I'm FOR paying this much for gas.

This is why I think the 2007 Energy Bill is such a great thing. The 35 gpm requirement is an increase of 40% above the current number. If the annual gasoline consumption in the United States is about 140 billion gallons, a 40% reduction would be HUGE. I'm all for it. This is another reason the oil companies have their panties in a bunch......and they should.

Hmm, so since the value of the dollar is down.........shouldn't the price of gas be down too?
Or were you saying that relative to the $60 bucks/barrel compared to the $90 bucks/barrel comment I mentioned? In that case, you'd be right....when oil was $60 bucks/barrel, the dollar was much stronger.

well just like everything else it all comes down to who has more money and we all know the oil companies have the money. They pay companies millions of dollars for their technology that could well exceed the 35 gpm standards so they don't hit the market. They keep the information tucked away and they meet the MINIMUMS required instead of trying to EXCEED the expectations.
