That's hard. There are many bands/singers that were badass in what they did. Take Robert Johnson for instance, what he was doing in the 30's has inspired everyone from god himself (eric clapton) to Led Zepplin to The Rolling Stones.

If you are talking about who just owns everyone else it would be Elvis.

My personal favorite is Led Zepplin though.

Lynyrd Skynyrd (the original members) is my favorite, but I like a lot of other bands too!

that is such a loaded question. To really consider what is the best band ever, you have to consider: talent, creativity, original(ness), how they influenced others while pioneering something new.

damn you could say Mozart and Beethoven are the best. Beethoven wrote music while he was deaf(granted he didnt lose his hearing right away), and its proven that mozarts music heightens peoples intelligence. There is something to be said about that. Also they did add scales and modes to music theory, which has been copied by every musicians and band since...

If you go by billboard sales, then hands down its the KING, elvis presley. I'm not an elvis fan, instead I love Pantera, who was the first metal band to debut at number 1 on the billboards. Was pantera creative, influential and did they pioneer a new style of music? YES THEY DID, but does this mean they are the best, no. There are more metallica fans then there are pantera fans, yet panteras singer (phil) can technically outsing James (metallicas singer) and yes Dime can out play kirk on guitar.

To choose the best you can't have a biased opinion and choose your favorite band.

By pure record sales: (again this is Rock based, not blues, country etc. since rock is the number 1 selling music genre)

Elvis
Beatles
rolling stones
AC/DC (back n black) HUGE record sales.

By pure talent and influence:

Kinks (first band to use distortion, which every rock/metal band has used since, yeah thats big, if we didnt have The Kinks, we might not have rock/metal)
Led Zepplin
Rush
Black Sabbath
Yes
hendrix and the band of gypsies

My choices and I prefer more progressive/melodic metal...

eternal tears of sorrow (melodic black metal)
Soilwork
machine head
Pantera
steve vai
buckethead
yngwie
savatage
queensryche

Now here is the funny thing, all the bands i listen too and even my own playing, always pay homage to the classical founders and the rock founders.
So yeah to choose the best band ever would be choosing a band that was out before most of us, if not all of us where born.

well everybody knows my favorite band is MOTORHEAD..Best band could be Bad Company. They had all talented guys, and some of the best songs , also Deep Purple in the early 70s.Another Band most people don't think of is Thin Lizzy, they started the whole dueling lead guitars . Best band as far as longevity is Rolling Stones . They was around before Zep and was around with the Beatles and are still going strong.....

My opinion? Rolling Stones, just b/c of their contributions and longevity and they were there from the start of the British Invasion of 1964/.
My Favorite Band? that's easy.
